Nature provided me with an illustration of two biblical truths about God's sovereign protection and Satan's attempts to attack us.
One day I was working in my yard when I noticed several birds surrounding one of our cats. The birds were forming a circle in mid-air and slowing descending. Clearly, it appeared they were planning to attack the cat. At first I couldn't think of any reason for such bizarre behavior.
It finally occurred to me that several weeks earlier that same cat had caught and killed one of the members of their flock, and now it was time for revenge. As I continued watching this nature show I was reminded of the Scripture in I Peter 5:8. "Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." I was shocked to learn that birds have such a remarkable memory, but so does Satan, when it comes to our weaknesses.
A few months later I observed the second picture depicted in nature; this time it had to do with God's protection. Living in the country near dairy farms, it is not uncommon to see a mother hen leading her baby chicks. They followed, staying as close as possible. Then the mother hen stopped and took the chicks under her wings. The spiritual application here is expressed in Psalm 91:4, where it says that "under His wings you may seek refuge."
If you and I stay close to Jesus and take refuge in Him, we will have the sovereign protection like the chicks, instead of being open prey for Satan. How about you? Are you a chick or a cat?
(Oh, by the way, the cat happened to run away before the birds got it!)
