My mother Elvada Roland wrote me about five letters while I was living at Mary Graham Hall just after leaving my aunt and uncles.
This is the first letter. I'm sure these letters will mean more to me in the future when my mother is no longer living. Looking back on them now I see my mother as some one who cared a lot about me even though she wasn't able to care for me or her other children.

I talked to Mr. Francois and I can't call you. Did they tell
you that I called yesterday? I still love you and am proud of you for what you've done. I hope you are happy there. Write and tell me what you don't like, and I heard you were bored there. Write to me and keep in touch with me because I want to be your mother and not a friend. Because I love you and will help you the best way I know how. Write to me if there's something you don't realize right now.
You are not a bad child you are just mixed up a little because your father will not accept you so listen to your supervisor Carl he can help you. He's very nice and I like him too.
Well answer this letter and I care for you and so does your friends. They love you.
