There can be no person who can be called a part-time Christian. Many people think that attending services on Sundays is the only mark of a Christian. A Christian cannot consider himself a Christian just by attending Sunday service. He is a Christian in a holistic sense. He is a Christian each and every second of his life. He is expected to live a true Christian life in all his thoughts, words and deeds.
Pope Francis on the life of a part-time Christian
Pope Francis advised the Catholics in a general audience recently that Catholics can not put their faith on a part-time schedule or rely on it just for the moments they choose. He pointed out that being Christian is a full-time occupation. He also noted that being a Christian is leading a dedicated life, guided by the Holy Spirit.
God acts only when a person is fully dedicated
Christian life is not half and half. Jesus has told about this that a person cannot serve two masters. “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” (Matthew 6:24) Living the daytoday life with Jesus is the way of Christian living. Being a Christian is not a namesake vocation; but it is a life of witnessing Christ throughout life.
A true Christian is guided by the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit can function only when a person is ready to know and follow the will of God. It is the Holy Spirit who brings the transformative active since knowing and doing what God wants is not possible with mere human effort. God cannot act if the person is superficial. He can act only when a person is fully dedicated and ready to yield to the will of God and serve Him. When a person is serious in his Christian vocation and he is not superficial in his Christian life, God acts through the Holy Spirit.
How to live a true Christian life?
God helps people to live a true Christian life if they aspire for it and try for it in their life sincerely. As the pope has pointed out prayer can help people live a true Christian life. He told that if people pray and are open to the Holy Spirit every day so that they can be “more sensitive to the things of God”, The Holy Spirit helps them to achieve this.
The feast of the Holy Spirit
Next Sunday is observed as Pentecost, the feast day of the Holy Spirit. At this juncture, it is worthy to think of the words of the pope. “Let's ask ourselves what steps we are taking so that the faith guides our existence" because "there are no part-time Christians, at certain moments, in certain circumstances, in certain choices; You can't be a Christian that way. You are Christians at all times, completely."
