"He Who Took Our Place"
Romans 2:4-5; 3:10-11, 18, 20, 23

We once despised the riches of God’s grace,
His goodness and His longsuff’ring toward us.
We did not know how much He did forebear;
We did not know how deep was our despair.

Our hearts were hard, impenitent and cold;
We treasured up God’s wrath--in sin were bold.
A promised day of judgment would appear;
A day when all the men of earth will fear.

We were not righteous--no not one of us;
We sought not God--in Him we did not trust.
Not understanding we each went our way;
No fear of God before our eyes displayed.

And by God’s law came knowledge of our sin;
Our consciences cried of our guilt within.
We all had sinned God’s--glory could not reach;
Our mouths were stopped--incapable of speech.

In Christ the righteousness of God appeared:
He came to save all those who would draw near;
Not by our deeds could we be justified,
But by our faith in Him Who bled and died.

‘Twas through Christ’s blood propitiation came;
We now have peace with God through Jesus’ name.
We have been freely justified by grace;
We are redeemed through Christ Who took our place.
