Study 2. Jesus’ Revelation of the Father
“All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” Matthew 11:27
1. Who knows the Father?
Jesus tells us that He is the only One who completely knows the Father. Only He has known the Father from eternity and shared His glory.
“He was in the beginning with God.” John 1:2.
Praying to His Father, Jesus speaks of “The glory which I had with You before the world was.” John 17:5.
Jesus’ knowledge of the Father springs from the Father’s knowledge of Him. “As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father.” John 10:15
The Son alone fully knows the Father.
2. Who is able to reveal the Father?
Because of His unique and complete knowledge of the Father, only the Son is qualified to reveal Him.
As in Matthew 11:27 above, the Father has entrusted the revelation of himself to the Son.
Jesus said, “The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.” John 3:35
Spiritual revelation is in the hands of the Son and it is only through His hands that a sinner can gain knowledge of God.
3. Who can demonstrate the Father?
John declares, “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.” John 1: 18
The Son came to Earth not only to tell us about the Father, but also to display or declare Him.
When Philip asked Jesus to show the Father to them, Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” John 14:9
He is the complete revelation and demonstration of God.
The Lord Jesus Christ is described as, “The brightness of His glory and the express image of His person.” Hebrews 1:3
He is sufficient. We need look nowhere else to learn about God’s nature and character.
4. What does that demonstration consist of?
Through the whole of his life on Earth, Jesus showed us the Father.
Throughout His teaching, His miracles, His example, He displayed God’s love and mercy, but also God’s holiness and justice.
Supremely, Jesus revealed the Father in all His fullness at Calvary.
“God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself.” 2 Corinthians 5:19
That was the place where, “Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.” Psalm 85:10
5. In what manner did Jesus come to reveal the Father?
These verses say it all:
“He made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:7,8
The Lamb of God is worthy of all our praise and worship forever!
