Disobedience of the Law of God by Phyllis M. Inniss
“but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Gen.2:16)
This commandment God issued to the first couple after He had placed them in Eden. Why did Adam and Eve disobey God’s command? The serpent, the devil, beguiled the woman, telling her that she would not surely die. She believed this strange creature rather than the Word of God. Adam showed the same weakness in that he did not resist the temptation Eve brought to him in the form of a luscious fruit. Their disobedience brought sin into the world and sin separates man from God. However, God, the all-merciful, showed compassion by making them tunics of skin to cover their nakedness before expelling them from the garden.
We read throughout the Bible, and especially the Old Testament that the Israelites continually disobeyed God’s warnings and suffered terrible consequences. They lost battles (2 Samuel 2:17), they suffered famines, (Jer. 44:13), cities were destroyed, (Jer. 44:6). They experienced The Flood, (Gen. 7:17); they became captives of other nations, (Jer.50:33). The apostle Paul says these things happened to them as examples and are recorded as lessons for our admonition (1 Cor. 10:11), but are we learning? We can restore our position with Christ if we repent of our wrongdoings and sincerely ask for forgiveness. He is always ready to forgive us our sins.
