"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God."
When Heather's baby died in her womb just before birth, she was inconsolable. None of us knew just how to comfort her till someone came to her and said, "I had a child whose heart stopped beating in the last week of my pregnancy."
She was able to weep with Heather and bring her the comfort of a deep understanding. And Heather knew that she really did understand. She was also able to tell Heather of the comfort she received from pressing in to God during her time of pain and loss. Her shared experience enabled her to pray effectively with Heather and encourage her to trust God to see her through.
If you are going through difficulty and deep pain, it is not meaningless. When you lean on God, He will comfort you (see Ps 34:18) and you will have been given a unique gift whereby you can comfort others in a way unparalleled by anyone who has not experienced what you have.
Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace, you know my pain. Send your Holy Spirit, the supreme Comforter, to be with me in this time to equip me for the plans you have for me. Amen
