Have you ever asked your child to clean their room and upon your arrival to inspect it felt like you were being scammed?
You know it looks clean at first glance but after walking in and looking around you see lumps under the bedspread where the remnants of PJs are left and the closet door isn't shut all the way because the pile of things that was thrown in there is blocking the door. When you look at your child their facial expression is half a guilty smile and half a smirk that says, "You can't blame a kid for trying".
I recently got the revelation from God that sometimes we are the same way with God regarding what's in our heart. Just as the parent in the scenario described will always see the evidence of the poorly cleaned room so God sees the evidence of a poorly cleaned heart.
When it comes to the heart most of the time our lack of cleaning isn't intentional it's just hidden under layers of excuses and justification as to why we're okay just the way we are. Although we think the justifications are good reasons for our behavior, the truth is they only cover the fact that a deep cleaning needs to take place. In essence they become the lump under the bedspread that the child acts like he doesn't see.
A move from one house to another always requires a thorough deep cleaning. One that will expose all the lumps and piles we've been hoping to keep hidden or we've subconsciously allowed. The other day during this moving process we were taking down decor from a very high ledge. Before we removed the pieces from the ledge it looked like it was fairly clean from where I was. But once each individual item was removed an unsightly truth surfaced. The ledge was absolutely filthy. A ring where the item had sat was pure white and everything around was layered with dust. I stood there in amazement and thought to myself how deceived I was into thinking that the ledge was okay the many times I had looked at it when it reality it needed in depth cleaning.
God wants us to be honest with ourselves and open our heart for deep cleaning. He already sees the lumps under the bedspread, the stash under the bed and the pile in the closet of our heart and while He would like to just reach down and clean it for us, there is a process that He as our loving Father knows we need to go through that will ultimately help us to grow and develop character on the path to our freedom. As parents upon seeing the bedroom where shortcuts have been taken our job is to make sure our children know how to properly clean the room but then to step out and let them clean it so they too can grow up and develop character.
There is no short cut when it comes to dealing with the clutter of our hearts. It's a step by step process which can only begin when the biggest obstacles of deception, manipulation, excuses and justifications get moved out of the way. That begins from seeing clearly and being willing to accept the truth without excuses.
It's been a long time since my children have been in that short cut mode of bedroom cleaning, yes they have grown up and moved on to the open honest communication of it's a mess and we all know it. When they get around to cleaning it they generally do a good job but even when it's not as clean as I'd like it to be the honesty remains. That's a sign of freedom.
Freedom that comes from knowing that I love them regardless of what their room looks like. Because of the knowledge of the love I have for them and the benefits that love brings most of the time they desire to keep their rooms clean to please me and stay in peaceful fellowship.
We can have that same freedom regarding our hearts. No matter what the clutter of our heart looks like God loves us. When we whole heartily receive the love He has for us and the benefits of His love we will in turn desire to clean our hearts to please Him and stay in fellowship.
So while the process of honesty can be painful the end result is a beautiful love relationship with our Daddy and that is worth the pain!
What areas of your heart look like a clean bedroom scam? What bedspread lumps and piles in the closet are you trying to hide from others? Or trying to hide from God?
A thorough deep cleaning will bring deliverance and freedom. What are you waiting for?
