It never ceases to amaze me how God shows us revelations that can change our lives if we will apply them. Yesterday at the opening ceremony of the small Christian school where I'm the principal, one of the children gave a testimony and it was one of those revelations.
Before the Thanksgiving Holiday I challenged the students to give some thought to the things they were thankful for. Encouraging them not to just give the normal surface level answers such as, "I'm thankful for my family, food, a house." While these things are something to be thankful for and I'm not making light of them, sometimes they tend to be the standard answers that people rattle off at the traditional, "what are you thankful for" question on Thanksgiving.
Yesterday I asked if any of our faculty or students would like to share what they were thankful for. One of our third grade boys shared that he was thankful for protection. He then went on to share that his family was in a car that veered off the road and hit a guardrail that protected them from a serious accident. They drove away with only a few small scratches. He specifically stated that he was thankful for the protection that God had provided; the guardrail.
The testimony hit home for me because just a few months ago a close family member that I dearly love fell asleep at the wheel and a guardrail saved them from a serious accident that could have been extremely serious and possibly fatal. I realized that although many of us drive by countless guardrails every day we don't stop and take the time to thank God for them. But I also got a powerful revelation about the protection of God.
Before a person hits a guard rail they have usually crossed the road grate that causes a loud noise when your tire moves over the painted line. In most cases the noise will cause the driver of the car to move back on the road. However, if the person is not able to gain control quickly the guardrail is there to stop the car from going into the dangerous area or even over cliffs.
The same way that the guardrails are placed on roads by communities to protect their citizens God places guardrails in our life to protect us from hurtful consequences.
HIS SPIRIT whispers to us when we are veering off the path of righteousness giving us the opportunity to gain control quickly however if we fail to hear HIS voice then the guardrail of pastors, parents or mentors is there to protect us from the dangers of leaving the path of right living. His WORD is an internal GUARDRAIL that we are to place in our hearts so it can guide us without having to cross the grate (the whisper of the Holy Spirit) or run into the correction of our accountability partners or authority.
Regardless of which of the three means of protection God uses and sometimes it's all three. He places it in our lives to stop us from going into dangerous areas that could bring hurtful consequences.
His WORD is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path that provides the guardrails to keep us on the path of righteousness and safe from consequences that can be painful or cause great suffering. Consequences that like a serious accident can change our lives forever.
As parents it's our responsibility to help our children learn the WORD of GOD and help them put it in their heart so that the WORD will be the guardrail to keep them safe. When they cross over the line and the grate we are to be the guardrail that moves them back on the road.
It may not feel good to be this guide to our children but with the understanding that if guardrails are not placed in our lives to protect us then serious accidents or consequences will come that have a far greater effect then a few scratches.
Correction is protection and protection is love. When parents, pastors and teachers have full understanding of this it is easier to overcome the temptations and distractions of life that work to interfere with the correction and guidance our children need. Parents are called to be the direction, protect and correction their children need to help them be the best they can be and reach the fullness of God's design for their life.
I encourage you to be that guardrail that guides your children back onto the path when they step off and head towards hard consequences. In the end they will thank God for the protection.
I know this because a 3rd grade boy shared his testimony yesterday!
How many guardrails do you drive by daily, on the road you drive home on and spiritually? Next time you see a guardrail let it be a reminder to thank God for the guardrails He's placed in your life.
