Close Encounters by Antje Hill
II Cor. 2:15: NKJV “For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”
My husband pulled me closer, burying his head close to my hair. He loudly exaggerated his breathing as he signed, “Umm, that’s nice. Not too wild, not so subtle. It’s delicate. I like it!”
“I thought you would like this new fragrance,” I smiled, planting a kiss on Richard’s cheek. I am selective of the perfumes and colognes I purchase because Richard notices. They linger, they make him think of me. A verse I had read that morning, during my quiet time, reminded me of another kind of fragrance.
Paul tells us we are the fragrance of Christ at our work places, in our social circles and as we go through our daily experiences. God wants us to change the atmosphere. He has given us the power to do this. It’s not hard for a hurting world to detect something pleasant, because it's not an everyday occurrence. It turns heads, it makes people smile. His presence in us makes that difference.
That God would take a deep breath and pull me close, as He watches me ebb and flow through my daily activities, has become a desire of mine. I’ve learned my relationship with the Lord is not about keeping a set of rules. It’s about turning heads with the fragrance of Christ-likeness, and it makes Him happy to call me His child.
