3 ďBlessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Being a Christian is a blessing and a burden. My burden is to reach as many people I can so they can meet Christ. I donít know what (if any) results will be, but Iím led to try. What this verse says to me is that Christ has compassion for the broken. It is said that Pride is a deadly sin. I believe thatís true because the proud feel like they donít need Christ. That goes for the religious proud as well. The proud are pleased and happy that they are not like the broken. Bring a homeless person who hasnít been able to bathe to a church service. You might find out what kind of church you are attending.
People often get broken at an early age. They are called ďlosersĒ at school. They sit alone at lunch. They are picked on at gym class. Maybe parents tell them they are big disappointments. They then believe they are who people say they are. When a person is broken, they often turn to rebellion, drugs, sex, and other things to fill them with what they need the most, acceptance.
Other people get broken by war, divorce, the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, the consequences of making bad choices, and other inevitable tragedies which hit us all. They often turn to anger and question all the things they previously believed. People question how a merciful and loving God can let this happen. Life, they assert, is not fair.
Life may be not fair, but you CAN be set free:
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, ďIf you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.Ē
Jesus told us we do not have to be slaves to sin. The power of His Word will set you free. The power of His Blood will wash your sins away. They are gone and forgotten. The peace of God which passes all natural understanding will ease your sorrows. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit will guide your path. All this can be yours once you realize you are a sinner and unworthy of a most Holy God. For you to admit that, you have to be poor in spirit. Rejoice because God doesnít see you the way the world sees you.
He loves you so much that He went to the Cross and sacrificed Himself and atoned for ALL of your sins. Past, present, and future. The work of Jesus Christ was finished on the Cross. The best part is that He accepts you just as you are. Wonít you accept His free gift? You donít have to suffer anymore.
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
16 So the last shall be first, and the first last.Ē
