HAGER'S RESCUE by Gloria Dean
Psalm 34:18 NLT - The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
Hagar did not know where she was. Her son was her one reality. His infrequent and weak cry reminded her to stay in control. "Find shade!" her mind cried "Find water!"
She no longer cared what Sarah or Abraham did to her or what she had done to Sarah. Her soul groaned for rescue, if not for her then at least for Ishmael. She felt her life slipping away. For days they had survived on sips of water and wild berries. They had made it to the spring, but it was dry. Not even the lizards were coming out of their sandy beds now. They were in the wilderness, lost and dying.
Ishmael's eyes were sunken and he no longer cried. She had not imagined that they would die like this. Her thoughts went to her childhood, her loving uncles and her beautiful Egyptian mother. She had become a maid of the noblewoman Sarah and had felt great joy and pride to be chosen for the elevated role of bearing the master's heir.
She had become proud and taunting. Now she realized her error.
"Oh God" she cried. "Did we deserve this? Ishmael is so innocent and a child". She felt herself drifting into unconsciousness, but then she heard a sound. Someone was calling her name and it was not her son's voice.
Maybe all was not lost after all.
