“Mary at the Tomb” by Laura Hawbaker
John 20:17 KJV Jesus saith unto her, “Mary.” She turned herself, and saith unto him, “Raboni”, which is to say Master.”
Sadly, Mary of Magdala, drew near the tomb. She was exhausted, deeply mourning, and yet felt strangely drawn to the grave. Her meager offering of spices for his decaying body, seemed but a pittance compared to the miraculous freedom and love Jesus had given her. Weeping, Mary looked into the tomb and much to her dismay Jesus was not there! His body was gone! Someone had taken him away! Not only had she witnessed his cruel death, now she was denied the healing gift of lovingly attending his body. Alone, confused, bereft, Mary cried out to the man standing near, “Sir, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have laid him.”
Jesus didn’t scold Mary. He didn’t say, “Foolish woman, stop weeping!” He simply looked at her and said, “Mary.” At the tenderly spoken sound of her name, she knew him! She wasn’t alone after all! Her Master was alive!
Do you feel alone and abandoned today? Does the Lord you once loved seem far away? Are you asking how a loving God can allow such hard things in your life? Are you facing loneliness or death? Are you fearful?
You are not alone. You may not recognize him, but Jesus is here. He calls you by name. Fall on your knees and cry, “Master.” He is alive, He loves you, He will not abandon you.
