"Chew on This" by Karen Sue Hale
"Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long." "How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" Psalm 119:97 & 103 (NIV)
Meditating on God's word is like eating a Bit-o-Honey®. I don't swallow it whole. I chew it slowly to enjoy it as long as possible. Since it sticks to my teeth, I can taste it long after the candy is gone.
When I meditate on scripture, I chew on it. I ponder its implications. I seek to apply it and share it with others. I consider the ramifications of obedience or disobedience to its commands. I see how it fits in context. I savor the promises. I memorize verses to extend the sweet taste of God's word.
If you desire wisdom and understanding, meditate on God's word. Slow down, take time, and continue to think about it throughout the day. Talk about it. Journal your thoughts. Memorize key verses.
Meditate in the car, on the treadmill, or in the shower. Take your Bible to a park or some other quiet place and have a "date" with the Lord. Take a break from life's busy pace and invest time in learning to really live. The return on that investment will be wisdom, insight, and understanding. As the Psalm says, God's word is "sweeter than honey to my mouth." Try chewing on a bit of that honey today!
