The Fairest Flower
by Richard Sherrer

My heart is never haughty,
Nor mine eyes are ever lofty;
Rather with the start of spring,
The fairest flower to bring.

O Lord, my heart is not vain,
It is like a gentle rain;
Flowing down the sloping roof,
Spreading out to show the proof.

Proof of having a Savior,
Since God looks on with favor;
The One we call Christ the Lord,
As we walk in one accord.

For my eyes do not look down,
And not considered renown;
The way I think of others,
More like them being brothers.

I am not involved in things,
Too big that a headache brings;
I serve in a subtle way,
Showing peace and love each day.

My soul is calm and quiet,
As the world sees a riot;
Brewing on the horizon,
Showing this life nearly done.

But my soul did feel content,
No torture or with torment;
While facing daily strife.
In the autumn of my life.

Like a lamb or a child,
With his mother so mild;
Nestled in her loving arms,
And kept safe from all alarms.
