With tears in his eyes, Patrick related how all of his hopes in life had been disappointed. Divorce tore his world apart; his company downsized, sending Patrick to the unemployment line. His degree is nearly worthless these days. Now he was at the homeless shelter.
"Every person in my life has let me down," he lamented.
Life has a way of letting us down: disappointing us. We cannot depend on the things of this world. Things change... people lie and are not always faithful... The market crashes; we get sick or our dreams burn up in a blazing fire.
God never changes; He is always faithful. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. The only thing that is absolutely reliable and always truthful, the only thing that remains unchanging is God's word. God and His word are immutable, holding steadfast through all life's storms.
When our faith is in God's promises, we have a hope that can never be dashed against the rocks of disappointment.
Patrick has now completed a year long rehabilitation program based on biblical principles, is in a work program and doing well. When I saw him last week he said,
"I've never known anyone so faithful as Jesus before, everything it says in the Bible is true. I can't explain it, but I have His joy and peace inside..."
