If we turn on the TV and flip through the channels we have so many paid advertising commercials on fitness that’s designed to reshape and condition our bodies to a desired look we’ve had in our teen years and or a look that we should ideally have for health reasons. There’s no doubt that if we purchase the PX90, Zumba fitness or Insanity workout that it will work if we apply the workout and remain dedicated to the program until completion. We will see results after 60-90 days. I’m a living witness to these products that actually work if we just simply do it.
The spiritual point I am trying to make is that the only way we can be transform SPIRITUALLY—that is reshaped and condition to do the will of God and be recognized as a strong and vibrant Christian is when we become ROOTED and BUILT UP IN HIM. Paul wrote to the Christians at the city of Colosse;
Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in HIM,
Having been firmly ROOTED and NOW BEING BUILT UP IN HIM and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude (Colossians 2:6-7 NAS).
Recap of: A Time to Plant Uproot Teardown and Buildup
Solomon gave us some practical lessons of TIMELY EVENTS that we will encounter as Believers (See Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 NKJV). Planting, Uprooting, Tearing-down and Building up are activities we will find ourselves doing at some points in a lifetime on earth.
The Apostle Paul also used the terms of Planting, Sowing, Reaping, Rooted and Built up in some of his letters in the New Testament. In his letter to the Christians in Colosse Paul said we are to be Rooted and Built up in Jesus.
Concepts of Being Rooted
There are several things we need to highlight from these 2 verses in Colossians 2:6-7;
1. We must walk in HIM—that is to regulate our lives and conduct ourselves in union with and conformity to Jesus (Colossians 2:6 AMP)
2. Having been firmly ROOTED—that is having the ROOTS [of our being] firmly and deeply planted [in HIM, fixed and founded in HIM] (Colossians 2:7a AMP)
3. And now being BUILT UP IN HIM—that is being CONTINUALLY BUILT UP IN HIM (Col.2:7b AMP)
4. And established in your faith—that is becoming increasingly more confirmed and established in the faith (Col. 2:7c AMP)
5. Just as you were instructed—the Amplified says just as you were taught (Col. 2:7d AMP)
6. And overflowing with gratitude—and abounding and overflowing in it with thanksgiving (Col. 2:7e AMP)
By using the Amplified Bible to elaborate the verses from the New American Standard version we get a clearer picture of what Paul was trying to say to us about being ROOTED and BUILT UP IN JESUS.
If it was a workout program like Zumba Fitness we would dance our way to being fit and healthy.
If it was an Insanity Program we would do all kinds of workouts that you would do with weights and without but doing them non-stop to achieve to desired results of being fit.
These fitness programs all have several things in common;
1. You need to do it their way to achieve the look you’re expecting
2. You need to do it consistently—daily or 5 times a week with 2 days off
3. You need to be dedicated—not just do it for 2 days then next month you try it again for 4 days
4. You need to eat right—no over eating or careless eating
5. You need to supplement your diet with Vitamins, Protein shakes, Amino Acids, L-glutamine and whatever nutritional supplements you may need to replenish your body.
6. You must rest and sleep well.
Let me share something we tend to overlook or fail to tell everyone about the difficult part of working out most people don’t expose all the hidden pain behind starting an exercise program. I remember when I first started working out I was SUPER-SORE for about 2-3 weeks into the workout then after that my body had adapted to the pain that it became addictive in a positive way that I now began to desire to go back out to the gym and work out. Then after taking off for a few months it will happen all over again it always takes about 2 weeks to get use to it and get back in the flow of working out passionately.
Living the Christian life is similar to working out physically. We need to work-out our human Born-again spirit by reading Scripture daily. We must consistently read it not just one time each day. I normally read a chapter more than 5 times in a day and I would read it in different translations to get the idea of what is being said in those verses. Then as I go about my day I’m meditating on them this is when the HOLY SPIRIT will begin to grant you Divine Revelation about those passages of Scripture and give you the practical insight to what to do in-light of what you read.
Once you begin to capture the Revelation about the passage of Scripture you will see that it’s a principle in the area of Love, Forgiveness, Fasting, Hope, Faith, Spiritual Gifts and more… Then you will begin to ask yourself what does it mean? How does it apply to my life? As you question the passages the HOLY SPIRIT will begin giving you ideas as to the practical applications of those Scriptures in that area.
If you are stuck or clueless as to what to do the HOLY SPIRIT will lead you to think about someone who may be more knowledgeable about that particular passage. Or you may find a book or read an article that will share more insight about the verse or verses you are interested on learning.
Being ROOTED IN HIM
It’s important that we define what we must be ROOTED IN—We must be ROOTED IN JESUS and the practical way of living a life of faith on earth as HE demonstrated to us to live it. It’s also important to note that the Apostle Paul did not say to be rooted in (Peter, Mary, John, and James) or any other Apostle or Prophet in Scripture. The Pope is said to be like Peter in every way, but Peter was married and Jesus healed his mother-in-law (See Matthew 8:14-15 NKJV). The Pope is practicing celibacy why? Peter wasn’t celibate! We never heard of a Pope being used by God to heal the sick, or lay hands on believers to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Peter did these things why is the Pope not doing these things. (Food for thought)! This is why we must follow Jesus’ example and be ROOTED and BUILT UP in Jesus.
Being ROOTED and BUILT UP IN JESUS is our aim as believers. The principles Jesus taught us, the Commandments He left us, the way He showed His disciples to pray and heal the sick and minister to the poor is what we should be ROOTED and BUILT UP to practically apply.
Philosophy vs. Jesus Christ
The Apostle Paul wrote by what means we must be ROOTED and BUILT UP IN JESUS;
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ (Colossians 2:8 NIV).
There are 3 things to point out in this verse;
1. We are not to be captivated by persuasive arguments that do not center on the Teachings of Jesus Christ.
2. Hollow and deceptive philosophy is simply intellectualism that rationalizes things from an educated perspective and it dazzles those who are uneducated.
3. The philosophy that many feel inferior to learn or understand is just basic principles of this world. It’s nothing complicated or far out they’re JUST BASIC PRINCIPLES!
Socrates is known for the Socratic Method, Socratic irony, and the pursuit of knowledge. Socrates is famous for saying that he knows nothing and that the unexamined life is not worth living. The Socratic Method involves asking a series of questions until a contradiction emerges invalidating the initial assumption. Socratic irony is the position that the inquisitor takes that he knows nothing while leading the questioning.
If we were to be Socrates students and take his concepts to heart we would remain ignorant of a lot of things God wanted us to be intelligent about. Wasting time by leading a question and answer session with no hopes of coming to the truth of any given topic is idle dialogue. Jesus never wasted time in a question and answer session (See Luke 2:42-47 NKJV). Jesus was 12 years old when He sat with the Teachers both listening to them and asking questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.
Jesus always cleared up any religious misconceptions that are floating out there. Jesus cleared up foolish philosophical concepts. If Socrates and his students Plato and Aristotle would have pick up the Torah the Old Testament and read it carefully they would have been challenged to reconsider their opinions and writings. Philosophy, logic, science, metaphysics, ethics, politics and systems of deductive reasoning will never be fulfilling and insightful unless we take it up a notch to see it from a Biblical perspective.
This is why Paul said it’s the BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THIS WORLD. If it’s basic why are we intimidated by hollow Philosophy or psychology? Why is it that Plato and Aristotle are looked up to as amazing teachers? I understand that in the Middle Ages, the church used Aristotle to explain its doctrines. This is why some churches are in a mess today. But there is TRUTH that we can only gain by reading the Word of God when it comes to every other topic we have today. Math, Science, Metaphysics, reasoning, Spirit, Soul and Body, Heaven, Hell, mortal, immortal are all dealt with in Scripture and in a balance view.
Plato may have understood Eros (where we get the word Eroticism) yet in balance of Scripture the Bible shares principles of sexuality in a godly and practical way of enjoying without going to porn sites to learn a new trick to try out on your spouse. Read the book of Song of Solomon and I guarantee you that you will be ignited with passion. Phileo is brotherly relational love. Agape is unconditional love. The Bible places the right definition to the appropriate application. Philosophers throw all the info into the same arena to watch the battle of the dialogues. Maybe they needed the internet back then or an App for that! LOL, May God Bless you to be ROOTED and BUILT UP in Jesus Christ, amen.
Thank you for this article; you have made some good points and you are spot on as regards philosophy and the vain teachings of men. Believers need to be aware of the "leaven" of the Pharisees and the Sadducees as Jesus instructed, "Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees." (Matthew 16:6) A good article and well worth reading. Blessings on you.
