Sunday morning at church, two rows in front of my family and me was a father and his young children. During praise and worship the father stood with his daughter in his arms. His daughter was totally consumed with her Father. She held each side of his face with her small hands and looked into his eyes. She took her fingers and ran them across each crease and crevice of his face, around his eyes, nose, lips and ears. She ran her fingers through his hair. Several times she wrapped both arms around his neck and rested her head upon his shoulder. The father at times would put her down to stand next to him. She was never far from his side and her time on the floor did not last long and once again she was in her father's arms.
Why did this moment between a father and daughter intrigue me so? I watched the daughter examine her fathers face, her face radiated with happiness, love, and joy. The daughter's eyes were totally fixated on her father regardless of what was going on around her. As she placed her head on his shoulder peace, contentment, and a sense of acceptance were in her eyes. When she stood by his side, she stood tall, strong and confident, never more than a few inches from his side.
God took this father and daughter moment a reminded me that He longs for His sons and daughters to be more like this little girl. He longs for us to be consumed and intrigued by Him. He longs for us to seek His face more and more every day. God longs for us to look deep into His eyes and see His heart. He longs for us to desire to be held in His arms of strength and power. He longs for us to stand by His side and never venture away from Him. God longs for us to know Him as our Knight in Shining Armor, One True God, the God of our Salvation, Father of all Fathers, Father to the Fatherless, our Peace Maker, Deliverer, Redeemer, our Joy Giver,
Forgiver, Creator, Provider, Best Friend, and our Faithful Companion.
What are we, as God's sons and daughters, doing each and every day to get to know our Heavenly Father in a deep and intimate way? God is waiting. God is longing for each of us to meet with Him face to face every day. He longs to reveal Himself to each one of us. Can we ever truly know and understand just how deep and how wide God's love is for us? We can strive to know His love for us by taking the time each and everyday just like the little girl, to examine our Heavenly Father's face by reading His Word which in turn reveals who He is and who He longs to be in our lives. We can choose to rest peacefully upon His shoulder even in the midst of the noise and chaos surrounding our lives, we can rest in the knowledge of knowing Who our Father is. We can choose to stand close by His side and not allow the waves of life and our own fleshly desires carry us away. We can stand in strength and power, knowing we are never alone and that we are sons and daughters of the Great I Am, the One True King, God of Angel Armies, Friend of sinners, Emmanuel, God with us, Prince of Peace, Comforter, Protector, Provider, Counselor, God who sees, Great High Priest, Light of the World, Keeper of Our Souls, Rock of Our Salvation, Great Physician, Living Water and Bread of Life.
As God's sons and daughters, children of the One True God, we must spend time getting to know our Heavenly Father more intimately. We will then become more like this little girl; confident, peaceful, content, joyful, strong and hopeful. The knowledge of knowing who God is, who He longs to be in our lives, and who we are created be in Him can be life altering and life changing.
We can ask ourselves the following questions and be able to answer them with strength, power and confidence if we take the time to really get know our Heavenly Father. Whom shall I fear? Who loves me unconditionally? Who is for me and not against me? Where does my hope and strength come from? Who forgives me and washes my sins away? Who stands beside me and will never leave me nor forsake me? Who cherishes me for who I am? Who provides for me and meets my every need?
So today I am challenged to do what it takes to get to know my Heavenly Father in a deeper and more intimate way. Are you?
I know He is waiting and longing for us, His sons and daughters, to climb up in His lap, examine every crease and crevice of his face, look deeply into His eyes, lay our head upon His shoulder, rest in His arms of strength and acceptance, and stand tall in the knowledge of Whose sons and daughters we are!
Who are we that God Almighty would call us his sons and daughters and be our Heavenly Father?
"And I will be your Father,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty.”
2 Corinthians 4:18
"O Lord, what are human beings that you should notice them,
mere mortals that you should think about them?"
Psalm 144:3
