Recently, while having a 'discussion' with someone on Facebook, a comment was made that I seemed intelligent, which is why they didn't understand my "religious view". This seems to be a popular belief among the atheist community. However, the idea that the smarter a person is the less likely they are to believe in God does not hold up under scrutiny. To those who hold this belief to be true, I would respond: Were Martin Luther King Jr., Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln not intelligent men? What about Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton or Louis Pasteur? Or Beethoven, Mozart and Bach? Were these men not 'smart enough' to be atheists?
There are many scientists, philosophers, nobel-prize winners, former presidents and intelligent people from all aspects of life who've had a firm belief in God. In fact, an estimated 90% of the world's population believe in God, or a Creator. Why then should it be hard to believe that many of these people are indeed intelligent?
Therefore, I concede that this belief is just another lie of atheism; being spread like a virus thru atheist websites and blogs. It shouldn't surprise anyone that they say it, but it's quite suprising to see how many actually believe it.
As Christians, it is our responsibility to "always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear." 1 Pet. 3:15 If we stand by 'idly and let these lies continue to spread like wildfire, I believe we'll be putting our youth in jeopardy of someday believing these lies, and possibly losing their faith. We must learn to defend our God and our beliefs in order to put these lies, and others, to rest.
"But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. 2 Timothy 3:14-17 (KJV)
