Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her. So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them. ( Luke 4:38-39)
Jesus went to visit Simon. Simon’s mother in law was very sick, with fever. The Master healed her with His word. Imagine Jesus leaning over Peter’s mother in law as if He were to whisper something to her. He instead commands the fever to go away. At His powerful command, the fever ceases and the immediate feeling of wellness fills Peter’s mother in law’s body. In the past people have wondered, “What word is this that with authority and power he commands, and demons obey?”
What word is this? These are the words of the Almighty, glorious, magnificent God in the person of Jesus Christ, the King of Kings. The Sovereign of the Kings of the earth has commanded and at his voice every cell, every tissue, every organ, and finally the fever obeys. Our bodies obey by themselves to the command of the Lord! Our brains or will does not need to be involved. He has sovereignty over everything He has created and that includes our bodies. The question is, are we willing to obey Him with all our minds and souls as well? Because when the Lord speaks all creation obeys. When we recognize Jesus’ authority we ought to be compelled to obey Him. What else we are to do when we hear the voice of such a Mighty King?
The work of Jesus was total. So much so, that at that very moment this woman rose from bed to serve her Master with a heart of gratitude and not only Him but Jesus’ disciples as well. In response to Jesus’ blessings we are, like her, called to serve our Master and our brothers and sisters in Christ. That is the only reasonable response to His undeserving mercies.
I’ll develop a spirit of immediate obedience to my Lord Jesus. I’ll be grateful to Him for all His blessings. I will be diligent in serving Him and others as a response to His kindness.
