While sharing about God’s love and what He has done for me through prayer with a friend, she replied, “Christ will always tell you yes, because He is a gentleman. He cannot refuse.” I wanted to reply, “No. Jesus is not a gentleman, and He will answer no when He decides to, because He is God.”
I don’t think she was trying to be this ignorant in her response. The problem is that this phrase about Jesus being “a gentleman” has spread like a deadly virus among many churches today, and it is a lie.
Nowhere in the Bible is there something as absurd as God being our servant and obeying our every word. Nowhere do we find Him being a gentleman, dedicated to making us feel special. The Lord is always described as Sovereign, Almighty, an Unchangeable and Omniscient God, among other awesome characteristics. Only when we don’t know God enough, we could dare to diminish His very character and Sovereignty. Seeking to appear wise, we end up giving away our poor knowledge of the Scriptures.
Someone said in a blog that God doesn’t need us to defend Him, and I think that is true; after all, He is Almighty. Nevertheless, what would you do if someone offended your dad? Would you just stay there without saying anything? I really think God deserves much more respect than our earthly fathers, and we should denounce loud and clear that it is a great mistake to undervalue God.
Great prophets described God’s majesty in ways that should be enough for us to stay away from error:
“For who has stood in the counsel of the Lord, and has perceived and heard His word? Who has marked His word and heard it? Behold, a whirlwind of the Lord has gone forth in fury—A violent whirlwind! It will fall violently on the head of the wicked. The anger of the Lord will not turn back until He has executed and performed the thoughts of His heart.” (Jeremiah 23: 18-20)
“Who has measured the waters in the palm of a hand or gauged the heavens with a ruler or scooped the earth’s dust up in a measuring cup or weighed the mountains on a scale and the hills in a balance? Who directed the Lord’s spirit and acted as God’s advisor? Whom did he consult for enlightenment? Who taught him the path of justice and knowledge and explained to him the way of understanding? Look, the nations are like a drop in a bucket, and valued as dust on a scale. Look, God weighs the islands like fine dust.” (Isaiah 40: 12-15)
No. We CANNOT twist God’s arm. It will never happen. No matter who said it, it is impossible. The only way to get something from Almighty God is through submission and obedience, and only IF He decides to give us what we have asked.
We better get things straight. There is not such a thing as a servient God. That’s a contradiction of terms!
