Short Dramas and Plays
(ESTHER IS READING A MESSAGE FROM MORDECAI. SHE FINISHES THE NOTE AND THEN BEGINS:)
Okay, it’s official. Mordecai has lost his mind!
Now, no one understands more than I do how evil Haman is. I see him parading around the palace like he owns the place. He only bows to Xerxes because it profits him. I know he hates the Jews. I know he’d hang us all personally if given half the chance, but what Mordecai’s asking me to do is suicide. He wants me to appear before Xerxes unannounced, which alone could get me killed, inform him that Haman wants to kill all the Jews and that’s a bad idea ‘cause, guess what, I’m a Jew too. No problem! Why can’t Mordecai go to Xerxes himself? He’s part of the palace guard. He even personally saved the King’s life. Surely, he’d believe him!
Hey, I think I’ve been pretty agreeable to this point. When Queen Vashti was sent away, I came to the palace just as Mordecai asked. For an entire year, I was groomed and schooled and prepared to meet the King. I listened and watched and did exactly as I was told and I found favor with the King, just as Mordecai wanted. Now Mordecai wants me to throw away everything. And why does my dear cousin think I should do this? (SHE READS FROM THE LETTER.) ... “perhaps you have been placed here for such a time as this.”
For such a time as this? That’s the best he can come up with? For such a time as this?
Mordecai is crazy if he thinks that God would choose me out of all the women in the world to be queen. Who am I to save the Israelites from Haman’s wrath? Hello! Reality Check! I’m here because I’m pretty. Bottom line. End of discussion. If Mordecai remembers correctly, the last Queen who decided to speak her mind around here was unceremoniously tossed out. Xerxes isn’t interested in my opinions. You take away this crown and the royal robes and all you have left is a simple Hebrew girl who’s only major accomplishment is doing what other people have told her to do. I’m not anything special or extraordinary. How could God possibly use me? Why would he want to?
(ESTHER SITS AND READS THE LETTER AGAIN.)
... for such a time as this...
When I was a little girl my mother told me about how Moses argued with God. How he didn’t think he was worthy to be sent to Pharaoh because he stuttered and was afraid. (Pauses.) You know, there were lots of girls brought to the palace to looking to become queen. Many were prettier, but Xerxes chose me.
(A voice from offstage... as if echoing Esther’s thoughts) ... for such a time as this...
Abraham left his home and everything he knew to follow God... without knowing where he was going. Maybe God did bring me to this place, but... what would I say? How can I go before Xerxes unannounced?
(Offstage) ... for such a time as this...
Mordecai can’t do it. Haman hates him more than any other Jew. He’d have Mordecai hung before he knew what hit him.
(Offstage) ... for such a time as this...
Lord, have you really brought me to this place for such a time as this? I have absolutely nothing special to offer you, but yet, I can’t just sit around and watch my people be slaughtered by a maniac. I’d much rather lose my own life than to sit back and do nothing.
God help me. I’m going to Xerxes.
(ESTHER RISES AND WALKS TOWARD THE DOOR OF THE THRONE ROOM AND PAUSES.)
Okay. Deep breath. Keep breathing. Whatever happens, keep breathing. You can do this. What’s the worst that can happen? I’ll get killed. But if Haman has his way, I’ll be killed anyway. Now, just open the door and do this. If I’m here by God’s plan, He will go before me.
(ESTHER OPENS THE DOOR AND WALKS THROUGH JUST AN INCH OR TWO AND BOWS WITH HER FACE TO THE FLOOR.)
My King, even though you have not called for me, please allow your humble servant to approach your throne.
He’s smiling. That’s a good sign... I hope. Wait. He’s extending his scepter to me. Perhaps I am here for such a time as this.
