“I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8
Throughout the Bible we are told not to get too attached to earthly things because of their temporal nature. Way back in Leviticus 25:23 when God was giving instructions about the land the Israelites were about to enter he tells them that their earthly inheritance was not permanent, “The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants.” Again in 1 Peter 1:17 we are told to “live our lives as strangers here in reverent fear.”
For the early Israelites the danger was that they would place their security in owning their land. While for us the danger may be placing our security in our possessions or it may be our jobs or families. God knew that feelings of insecurity come from relying on earthly or temporal things. Our real security comes from relying on Christ.
During Earl Spencer’s tribute to Princess Diana he made the comment that she was an insecure person and Elton John described her life in song as “a candle in the wind”, which is a picture of insecurity. I don’t believe it is the way God wants us to live our lives. Rather He wants us to know that Jesus is our “sure foundation” (Isaiah 33:6). We find our security in Him and in Him alone.
