Here we go again
Another victim for the cross
Get out the hammer and the nails
We’ll show this crim’nal who’s the boss.
We’ll march him up to Calvary
A symbol of Roman victory
We’ll nail him fast and hang him high
Then listen for his plaintive cry.
The pain of nails in hand and feet,
The pain from stripes where he was beat
Serves him right we often say
The cross is proof crime doesn’t pay.
Well, it doesn’t pay the victim
But my buddies and me we get a perk.
We split the victim’s sandals, shoes and shirt,
Casting lots while the crim’nal dies,
Hardened to the victim’s cries
But today the job is really tough
I think I’ve finally had enough
‘Cause this one ain’t no criminal.
There’s no anger in his eyes,
No look of shame or remorse
“Father, forgive them” he replies.
I’ve hung many criminals here—
Many die on this hill each year.
But this one…
He’s just not like the others
Not like those two on either side
Guilty, caught in the act,
In flagrante delicto , that’s a fact.
But this one in the middle
(Jesus is his name)
He’s innocent, guiltless.
This job will never be the same.
No more will I see a cross
As just another day at work.
Hanging criminals to put them away
I killed an innocent man today.
But wait I hear another sigh,
“I commit my spirit” is his cry.
Yes, I raised the cross and drove the nails
Did all that my job entails
But Jesus gave his life
He gave it as a sacrifice
And the Roman cross became a place of life.
