Wandering on green hillsides,
Wooly, toddling sheep cannot see
the face of their shepherd
so far above them.
Yet, when they see his staff,
they know that he is near,
and they are not afraid.
They take comfort in his presence
with the knowledge of the love
he has for them.
They are certain when they wander
too far away from the flock,
he will wrap the crook of his staff
around them
and gently draw them back unto himself.
When they bleat out their complaints
for life’s uncertainties,
they’re aware that he is listening,
for they recognize his voice
in his gentle responses.
When many hindrances
appear before them,
he uses his staff
to make their way smooth.
Because they trust in his care of them,
they find contentment in his presence.
When they face attack from predators,
he protects them with his staff
and leads them to safety.
They do not need to know
what may lie ahead
because they trust that he knows
the way they should go
and he desires only the best for them.
He directs them to places for provision
of their needs of every kind.
Their future is secure in him.
Everything he does is for
the honor of His name.
