"And it is certainly true that the publishers
are looking for new writers. It is more easy
for a newcomer to get a hearing
than for the man of established reputation.
Nine-tenths of the publishers are gamblers.
They are always gambling on the chance of
finding the writer who will be the
great popular success. " --- The Writer A.D. 1912
SPORTS LITERARY COLUMNIST AND "THE PLAYS THE THING"
BY
COLUMBA KNOX
I went to the N.B.A. All---Star game.
This is when they had just added the 3---point shot. Larry Bird had just entered the league. He owned that shot. When he took that shot during the game, sometimes it seemed like he was shooting from the next county.
The game has ended; lets go. Nope.
We are still there at the Capital Centre.
There must have been a jersey---giveaway before the game; the dark hue blue are not human beings' shirts, they are seats --- the place is empty.
You can hear them stompping on those things that held the popcorn --- they are already cleaning the place.
I had been to Redskins games aplenty; Bullets games and the playoffs; Capitals games (somebody had to be there); we always knew how to beat the traffic jam and did so as soon as the games ended.
I declare, what the heck are we still doing there!!!
They are removing the floor where the game took place; you can now see the ice below. Stay there much longer and we will be able to watch a hockey game.
A few years later, I went to the N.H.L. All---Star game when somebody named Wayne Gretzky scored 4 goals.
There is somebody walking down the steps; its most likely the Chieftain of Security who is going to tell us to get the heck out of there.
He stops where we are and turns toward us and declares, "Hi. I'm Thomas Boswell of The Washington Post. Would you mind if I ask you some questions about the game???"
Dad gives a business---like answer, "Sure."
He starts his askings to those there with us; I was farthest from where he was standing and did not care if he did not asked me anything.
After some time had past, he asked how old I was; I told him. He then asked, "What did you think of the game???" I answered,
"There were times when I didn't know what the score was,
or which team was ahead;
the plays the the thing."
Thomas Boswell became a new human being.
You remember the cartoon when some character thought of a grand idea, a light bulb would appear above him and go on; that was Thomas Boswell.
His Column was read the following morning. Holy Bible, A.D.1611, declares, The First Are Last And The Last First. What I said was the last quote he got;
I was the first he quoted --- think about that!!!
His sub---title was ---
Forget About The Score, The Plays The Thing
THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I TOLD HIM!!!
Start understanding the sign of these times!!!
