Words Beat Sticks and Stones
As a child, when kids would taunt,
We told them, "Leave me be.
Sticks and stones may break my bones,
But words can never hurt me.”
Since those days, we’ve learned the truth;
Teasing’s not what we were told.
Sticks and stones may break the bones,
But words can pierce the soul.
Bumps and bruises go away.
Broken bones get strong, can heal;
But damage to a person’s soul,
Though unseen, is very real.
Damage to a soul goes deep,
Affects the person’s total life.
Words from others long ago
Now wound husband, kids, or wife.
Is there any way to heal
The gaping wounds that hide away,
Pouring out their poison on
Another soul another day?
The way is truth, to heal a life;
Admit the wounds, but give up blame.
Don’t pass on words that wound another,
But bless them all with Jesus’ name.
The Word of God can overcome
The hurt and bitterness within.
Healing and forgiveness come
When you don’t pass along that sin.
Yes, sticks and stones can break your bones;
Mean words can pierce a soul.
Give up your right to hurt them back;
The Word can make you whole.
