Twenty Years

Twenty years is quite a feat
For two who fell in love,
With heavy baggage in their hands
And a nudge from God above.

He watched them snip some loose ends
And tear at outer shells
They’d spent so long in building,
Trying to protect themselves.

But God knew walls between them
Would keep them far apart.
He wanted to do surgery
On hurts hiding in their hearts.

Like two great cats in a metal cage
They swung their powerful paws,
Ripping at the wound-scarred hearts
With hurtful words, like claws.

It wasn’t God’s best plan for them,
But He knew that it would work.
Their pride and stubbornness were strong;
It was time to heal, though hurt.

They acted out, gave their best shots
To keep their spouse away
From walled-in hurts they’d stuffed inside
In earlier anguished days.

But God desired to help them,
Not leave them hurting there,
“Give up your pride, repent, forgive,”
They heard Him say in prayer.

With counseling they learned techniques
For the other one to use.
“If I give up my rights, give in,
He might win; I might lose.”

He wanted her to end it
To avoid being surprised.
His demands to end their marriage
Brought pain, tears to her eyes.

He thought arguing meant it’s over,
Not attempts to be understood.
When he argued as a boy
That meant he wasn’t good.

If she wasn’t happy with their life,
Why stay and feel more pain?
He didn’t believe she’d heard God say,
“Beloved, he’s the man.

He’s the one I’ve picked for you.
He’s handsome and he’s strong.
His heart is mine like David’s,
Even when he does things wrong.

You both have faults and deep hurts,
But with my help you can heal
And shine for me like diamonds,
So men will know I’m real.

Be patient with each other,
Be committed to your love.
I’m always by your side, my child,
I’m not just up above.

I’ll comfort when you need it.
Give strength to you and peace.
Trust what I say, believe my words,
Don’t let your union cease.”

Though sometimes they lived far apart,
Their love remained, was true.
God helped them learn to love his way.
He’ll do the same for you.
