ARE WE FORSAKEN BY GOD?
Today, Lord, as I sit here my heart and mind are troubled concerning the children of not only our nation but also of children all around the world. It just breaks my heart to think of all the danger that is lurking out there, waiting for an opportune moment to lure our children away to do them harm. When I think back on the tragedies that have taken place in the last several years, I feel like crying out, just as Jesus cried out on the cross, ďMy God! My God! Why hast thou forsaken us?Ē It is then I remember what the scripture in II Chronicles 7:14 has to say.
14. If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land.
Then in verses 19-22 we begin to read what will happen because of disobedient spirits.
19.But if ye turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;
20. Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have sanctified for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a proverb and a byword among all nations.
21.And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to everyone that passeth by it; so that he shall say, Why hath the Lord done this unto this land, and unto this house?
22.And it shall be answered, Because they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath he brought all this evil upon them
I believe that just as God was speaking to Solomon in those days, so he speaks to us today through his Holy Word. It is in his word that we are able to find all we need to continue this journey as we make our way to our heavenly home.
Weíve heard people say over and over again how our forefathers came to this land and founded this land and itís government on their Christian faith. One of their desires in coming to this land was the freedom to worship God as they believed he had taught them to do. It was the Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth and all that that inhabit it in whom they believed and they had fought, some losing their very lives that freedom of religion might live.
The faithfulness of these people was not unnoticed by God. As they continued in their faithfulness God blessed them and the homeland they had founded and this land of America became known to others as a blessed nation, a rich nation, a nation of great opportunities and a nation of freedom, a nation so graciously blessed by God.
At some point in time however, we began to forget that it was not in their own strength that those first settlers and those who followed after were able to accomplish so great a fete as that of creating a new nation under God. It was their faith and trust in God that gave them the strength to continue in the face of trials and suffering.
In spite of Godís goodness, his mercy and great provision for us in this land we have begun pulling away from the one who so greatly has blessed us and begun to look to other gods or things to bring us happiness. You might say you have no other gods. That is probably true if weíre talking about gods of gold, silver, wood, trees, animals, . But what about our desire for wealth and the things it can buy, immorality, prestige, things that mean so much to you that keep you at a distance from God. You find it hard to find time for Bible study, prayer time, church worship services or fellowship with others of faith. This should not be allowed to happen and yet it sneaks up on us so suddenly that we donít often recognize it is happening. We need to always be on guard concerning our relationship with the Lord our God. Always keeping focus on what should be our first priority. The Bible teaches us in Matthew22:37, THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART, AND WITH ALL THY SOUL, AND WITH ALL THY MIND.
How are we measuring up today to the scripture we have just read? Think about Solomon, son of King David, when he took over the throne in his fatherís palace. God said to him, ďWhat shall I give thee?Ē Solomonís reply was a simple request for the wisdom and knowledge to rule over the people of Israel in a way that would be right and pleasing in Godís sight. His desire was not for worldly acclaim, prestige that would come from so great a position as king, not even the wealth and all that it would afford him. He simply wanted to be a wise and Godly man in a right relation ship with God and his fellow men.
In our nation today are we looking to God for the wisdom and knowledge that Solomon sought after? I wonder. Just recently I heard someone say that one of our fellow servants of our nation had made the statement that we had outgrown the Bible, the Holy Word of God. In that case I suppose we have outgrown God as well since the Bible is Godís Word. How utterly sad it is that we, a nation based on religious freedom, would elect someone like this to a position in our government. No wonder our nation is in such a state of woe today.
Letís just take a look at what has happened in the last years beginning with our government system to the everyday person on the street. Just as the Bible, Godís Word tells us, the devil is running to and fro throughout the land seeking those whom he may claim as his own and take into hell with him for all eternity. And he is having a high old time. Consider the list, lying, cheating, stealing, drugs, pornography, all kinds of sexual promiscuity, murder, include abortion with that, bribery, destruction of what others have worked so hard to have, people taking what is not rightfully theirs because they have no conscious or no empathy for their victims. The list goes on and on, but, I believe the worst crime of all is that our own government is taking away our rights little by little so that the day is soon coming when we wonít have the right to worship God at all.
Are we doing as God has said in II Chronicles 7:14, humbling ourselves before an Almighty God, seeking his face, repenting of our sins, in such troublesome times? Or are we looking to men to turn our nation around? How foolish it would be to put our nationís, our friendís, our familyís, and our own future into the hands of men. What a difference it would make if all across this nation people would get down on their knees praying to Almighty God repenting of their wicked ways, seeking his face and his forgiveness in humbleness of heart and asking for the wisdom and knowledge to turn our nation back to him.
But so many are too busy today chasing after other gods, greed for money and what it takes to keep up with their friends and relatives. This leaves many children with no supervision in a world with so many wicked schemes just waiting to lure them into their evil traps. They feel they canít come to church with their families because their work week has them so tired or they have so much they have to do around the house, or they need some time away for the weekend. Have they forgotten that God says that the Sabbath day is his and we are to keep it holy? Many parents are too busy today or too involved with their own lives, their wants, their needs they forget about the needs of their children. They provide well for them physically but what about spiritually and emotionally? Our children need and want deep down inside that close relationship with their parents. They need to know that they are loved and wanted, they need to know that we will do all within our power to keep them safe, that they can come to us no matter what the problem is and we will be there for them and that we are never too busy to listen.
Parents need to remember Proverbs 22:6 which reads, Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it. I am so thankful for a Mama and two sisters who took me and my two younger brothers to church where we were taught about Godís great love and mercy and the great sacrifice when his only begotten Son came into the world to die for the forgiveness of our sins and that he arose on the third day signifying that we too would die but live again in the place which he has prepared for us who are faithful to him. Knowing all that did not make a perfect child or teenager out of me but when I was tempted to stray from the teachings of God I always felt that tug at my conscious letting me know that I was outside of Godís purpose for my life. Had I not had someone to teach me the ways of God I would have had no remorse about it then or now. I would have still been living in my same old sinful lifestyle. But because I had been brought up under the teachings of Godís teachings I finally came to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and now I live my life for him.
But before I go any farther, let me say this. If you have read this far I feel you might have begun to think that I am just a big bag of hot air, a know it all, a prude, a disgruntled old soul that neither knows or understands what she is talking about. I wouldnít blame you if you did. But you see I really understand what you are going through because Iíve been there, done that. You see I was only thirty-six years old when my first husband died suddenly of a massive heart attack leaving me with four sons and one daughter to bring up. The boys were fifteen years of age down to eight years of age and my daughter was only five. Tough going, trying to get from the first of one month to the next. I had to drop out of the secretarial course I was taking as my daughter was not yet in school and the only job I could get did not pay enough to be able to pay for babysitter and transportation to and from school. But the worst mistake I made was in not giving my children a Christian based home with a Christian Mom. I also let myself get caught up in the ways of the world which was not a Godly influence for them. Thankfully today at the age of seventy-one years of age I have left all that behind me and I can never thank God enough that He never gave up on me. He alone is my hope, my joy, and my peace when these things surface in my mind to haunt me and fill me with despair, I know my Redeemer lives and because He lives I too will live. And so can you if you just place your faith and trust in Him and his love and mercy. A I think on all that I have written, I canít help but wonder just what are the other nations thinking about us now. A nation once so looked up to and admired now faltering, struggling to get itself back on track.
If youíve been keeping up with the news, and Iím sure you have, think about the time I first wrote this, sometime after the Columbine incident, and how much worse things have progressed. Donít get me wrong, Iíd rather be living in our country, the good old United States of America than anywhere in the world. But we must face the truth, we are facing great difficulties. We are living in a land where children are killing their parents, parents are killing their children, babies are being aborted with no showing of remorse for what they have done. Those in government positions who are supposed to be leading the way for America are caught regularly, lying, cheating, drugs, and immorality and think nothing of it. There was a time in our land when this would have been a shame and disgrace. But not only the government officials, many, many others are caught committing the same sins, even those who call themselves Christians.
But not only are we faced with our sins, our failures, and our disobedient ways against Almighty God, we are facing some disturbing changes in other ways. Think about the tragic happenings in the world, not just here in our own land. There have been numerous floods, fires, storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, diseases, droughts, etc. Could all this be Godís way of chastising us for turning our backs on Him, denying he is the true and living God? People of other nations must be looking at us now and asking themselves, Why hath the Lord done this unto this land and unto this house? Has he forsaken them and turned them over to their own evil ways? I truly believe the time of Christís returning is drawing nearer with every passing day. The signs are all around us. If you have not read Matthew 24th chapter, read it and compare it to the times in which we are living. Also study the writings of the prophets and compare the downfall of the people who had turned their backs on God and gone after other gods. Then I think you too will see the comparison of America and the world to what you read.
Just let me ask you this one thing; Are you prepared should Jesus return today? Are your sins under the Blood of the Lamb? If not, or if you are not sure, make that decision to ask Jesus into your heart today.
I will leave you with this message. God is a good God, a God full of mercy, compassion, and it is not his desire that any should perish but that all come to know Jesus Christ and be saved.
IN HIS WORD THE Holy Bible he left us hope in II Chronicles 7:14;
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land.
So today, all over this land, let us join together, realizing that weíve all had a part in the state of our land, from the people on the street to the White House and all who are a part of our government. None of us is exempt, so letís stop passing the buck and seek out the wisdom and knowledge of God so that we may see a nation with itís head held high once again.
Thank you ,Lord for placing me in a nation where I am able to voice my faith in you as Lord and Savior of my life. Too often Iím afraid I take it for granted. For all who read this, I pray for your blessings on their lives. For those who might not know Jesus Christ as Savior, I pray that they will make that decision soon. In Jesus name I pray, Amen
