My Other Dad

My Other Dad

Lord, I know you’re always there.
Help me stop and be aware.
And be more thankful in my prayers.

I love to sense you by my side.
I’m awed you’d care to so abide.
I felt your warm hug once; I cried.

You never leave, forsake your child.
I learned that once when I was wild,
While learning to tube-feed my child.

I couldn’t put the tubes in right,
Had trouble going to sleep that night,
Until you said it’d be alright.

Your peace enveloped me; I slept.
Next day you showed I’m not inept.
I learned the skills and then I wept.

I love to speak with my own dad,
But his dementia makes me sad,
Knowing the memory that he once had.

His unconditional love for me
Made it easy for me to see
The God of Heaven could really love me.

Your love amazes me each day.
Help me to listen when I pray.
Communication should be two-way.

It’s hard to quiet my mind each day,
To hear you speak in your still, small way,
So I visualize our meeting in another way.

My dad doesn’t talk much, but when he speaks,
It’s important; we listen; what might he teach?
So, though others may think it’s quite a reach

I imagine I’m sitting with my bigger Dad.
Being with each other makes us glad,
We speak; we listen. He’s my Dad!
