Learning To Be a Man
Why do men think
They can yell at their wives,
Just ‘cause they’re mad
Or upset with their lives?
He barks out a list
Of each mess that she’s made.
Why can’t she listen
To all that he’s said?
He instructs her to leave
His “man-cave” alone.
She can do what she wants
With the rest of the home.
Never mind what it looks like
When she doesn’t go in.
Empty cans, empty wrappers—
A reflection of him?
Does he forget
The small ears in the house,
The child who hears all,
Remains quiet as a mouse?
What does he think
As he curls up and hears
What is said of his mom,
Who has been brought to tears?
Is this the way
A man treats his wife?
Should he learn how to yell,
To insult, to cause strife?
He’s confused. He is told
To respect Dad and Mother,
But is this what he hears
As they “talk” to each other?
The young boy must learn
How to act like a man.
He’ll be quiet, remember
Every insult he can.
For now he’ll respect,
Show love to his mother,
But some day he’ll grow,
Fall in love with another.
How then will he treat
His beautiful wife
Whom he promises to love
For the rest of his life?
Will he love her, respect her
Like he wants to do,
Or remember Dad’s actions
And “be a man” too?
