The light shines in the darkness

"The light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it." John 1:5

The other morning I woke up. With very little light I shuffled and walked the few steps to the light switch. Pushing it on turned the light on waking me up more. Instantly the Bible verse above came to mind. The hallway was filled with light.

Another thought sprang to mind. Could the darkness spring up and overpower the light? Of course not.

The light is one nature, the darkness another. Not equal opposites. Light gives off energy, warmth or heat. It lights everything up so that you can see where you are going. It wants you to see. Darkness is passive by contrast. Everything in the hallway could be seen clearly once the light was switched on. Darkness was simply an absence of light. Or a huge reduction of light.

God is one nature and Satan another. God is light and wants you to see. Satan is darkness and wants to do all in the dark. To deceive. God is far greater than Satan, and deems how far Satan is allowed to go. There is no way ever that Satan can overpower God, or tell God what to do. Just like the darkness in the room could not engulf the light as long as it was switched on. God is always a light switched on.

No need to be afraid of the dark. Everything is the same as in the daytime, except things may be exaggerated. I went for a late evening walk in the woods nearby, a familiar place. I heard a sound and sensed a wild animal was there. I imagined it to be huge, threatening and dangerous. But then I reasoned that it was probably only a fox at worst, and they tend not to attack humans. The darkness can play tricks with your imagination but once you get the true view you feel safe again. Like the fox, Satan is also cunning.

In trials Satan tries scaring you. He will try to make you think he is larger and worse than he is. Compared to God he is puny. Because God is with you in the darkness, Satan is not able to scare you beyond a point. In intensity and time.

"Wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness." Ecclesiastes 2:13

God is the sum of wisdom and is an extremely brilliant light. Awesome and brighter than the sun in our solar system. God is much better than darkness and Satan.
