How many parents would stop at nothing to give their children the best gifts they possibly can? Think about it, you walk into a department store or Toys’R’Us and your child goes wild when they see all the toys that they either saw on T.V. or other kids have when you were in the park with them! Then after the Toys’R’Us experience we walk through the Mall and encounter the Children’s Place and see cute outfits that will fit just right on Gabby or little Johnny, so we buy them that outfit.
But since we did not find a pair of shoes that will match the outfit we go over to the shoe store, since we spent so much time at Toy’R’Us and Children’s Place it would be a great idea to stop and get something to eat or drink before going to the shoe store. Besides, the food franchises are near the shoe store so we will have something to eat then go buy a pair of shoes.
As Parents We Love to Give Gifts
I personally love to shop for my daughter. We will spend so much time at the store or shopping at the Mall. There is so much to choose from when you go shopping and you may want to try a new item out or go price hunting to see if the item you like is a few dollars less at the other store. Then we decide whether or not should we buy it—which most of the time we get it because that’s what our child or children ASKED for.
Jesus said, “so I say to you, ASK, and it will be GIVEN to you; SEEK, and you will FIND; KNOCK, and it will be OPENED to you (v.9) For everyone who ASKS RECEIVES, and he who SEEKS FINDS, and to him (or her) who KNOCKS IT WILL BE OPENED (v.10) If a son ASKS for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he ASKS for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? (v.11) Or if he ASKS for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? (v.12) If you then, being evil, know how to GIVE GOOD GIFTS to your children, HOW MUCH MORE WILL YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER GIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT TO THOSE WHO ASK HIM!” (Luke 11:9-13 NKJV)
ASK, SEEK, and KNOCK
I believe that many Christians desire more of God and they desire to obtain and maintain the Best Gifts they receive from God. However, having a DESIRE is one thing—knowing what to ASK for is another. Jesus always pointed out that God is OUR HEAVENLY FATHER. This statement takes on a whole new meaning of seeing God in a different light. It’s mind-blowing to see God as YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER, and we desperately need to catch an awesome revelation of this concept because it will radically change our thinking about ASKING GOD for GOOD GIFTS.
Jesus uniquely taught this FATHER—son relationship in HIS analogy to describe how OUR HEAVENLY FATHER deals with HIS children. This is why I started this article with a common shopping scene we normally have with our children. As we delight in taking our children to the Mall and buying them the latest toy or fashion and stop by to get something to eat in between is a modern day example of how OUR HEAVENLY FATHER would desire to shop for us and GIVE us GOOD GIFTS.
We need to ASK, SEEK and KNOCK for what we desire from OUR HEAVENLY FATHER.
What Are You ASKING For?
Are you hungry and desire something to eat? Do you need clothes and you have nothing to wear? Do you need POWER in your life to enable you to walk on a higher level of faith in your daily walk with God?
Jesus said, for everyone (not just some Christians—but EVERYONE) who ASKS RECEIVES… (Luke 11:10a NKJV)
Jesus spoke about ASKING YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER for:
This clearly teaches us that we can ASK OUR HEAVENLY FATHER for Material things and Spiritual things.
Do You Really Want It?
We need to have the mindset of a child when we come to Our FATHER IN HEAVEN. Our children do not question whether or not we have the money to buy them what they desire from the department store, they just keep ASKING; Mommy buy me this, daddy I want that! They look so cute when they ASK for it. So we give in and buy them what they ASK for knowing that they are ready for that age appropriate toy or outfit. Well, beloved YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER is the same way.
We must ASK for what we need from Our Heavenly Father in the same manner our children will ASK us for things. Jesus had to give us new insight to the Topic of Prayer when we go to Our Heavenly Father with our requests. ASK for food, clothing and shelter…ASK for the Holy Spirit!
I have the Holy Spirit because I’m a Christian!
I’m not here to argue about Theology, but since we must clarify what Jesus was teaching us. Allow me to dissect the Scriptures carefully, Clearly Interpret it, and properly place it in the right context.
1. Jesus said, if you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, HOW MUCH MORE WILL YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER GIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT TO THOSE WHO ASK HIM! (Luke 11:13 NKJV)
2. Jesus pointed out 2 things here in this verse; (1) In order to ASK for the Holy Spirit we must be His children. (2) Our Heavenly Father desires to give us the Holy Spirit more than we desire to give good gifts to our own children (THAT IS A POWERFUL TRUTH WE NEED TO CONSIDER).
3. Now in order for us to qualify for receiving the Holy Spirit we must be His children. In other words, we must be Born-again! The Apostle John said, but as many as receive HIM (Jesus), to them gave HE (Jesus) power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name (John 1:12 NKJV)
4. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit (or Wind) is the person or agent that brings us the New Birth experience. Jesus told Nicodemus, that which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Do not marvel that I said to you, you must be Born-again.
The wind blows, where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is Born of the Spirit (John 3:6-8 NKJV)
Different Experiences with The Holy Spirit
There is no question that a believer who is Born Again has the Holy Spirit—because it’s the Holy Spirit that Supernaturally rebirths our human spirit (made our human spirits alive See, Ephesians 2:1 NKJV) when we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. However, as intelligent students of Scripture we know that Jesus would not contradict Himself, so what was Jesus talking about when He said, If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, HOW MUCH MORE WILL YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER GIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT TO THOSE WHO ASK HIM! (Luke 11:13 NKJV)
Jesus was referring to another experience--that is, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit! You see, be Born-again is one experience where the Holy Spirit brings our human spirit alive to know and sense God in our lives. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is when we are immersed or become full of the Holy Spirit with Power to be effective witnesses. Luke explained it this way when Jesus instructed His disciples to wait in Jerusalem to encounter this unique experience.
And being assembled together with them, He (Jesus) commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, which He said, you have heard from Me (Jesus); for John the Baptist truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now (Acts 1:5 NKJV)
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth (Acts 1:8 NKJV)
Different Experiences as a Christian
Jesus instructed the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they be empowered by the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49/Acts 1:8 NKJV). As believers will encounter the following experiences;
1. We must be Born-again (John 3:1-8 NKJV)
2. We are Baptized in water only after we are Born-again (Acts 8:35-38 NKJV)
3. We are to experience the baptism with the Holy Spirit (Acts 19:1-7 NKJV)
You see, I love to point out what Theologians fail to explain. The Book of Acts shows us the pattern of Evangelism and different levels of experiences that a Christian may encounter. We are still living in the book of Acts we are just in a different chapter we are on Chapter 2013 (Hello)! The signs, wonders and miracles did not stop and neither did the process of taking new believers through the Divine Protocol that they must experience to be complete as a believer. So when Jesus said to ASK for the Holy Spirit He wasn’t contradicting Himself—He was saying there is more to experience.
In Acts chapter 8, Philip the Evangelist preaches in the City of Samaria and they were saved, healed, delivered and Baptized in water. Then the Apostles in Jerusalem sent Peter and John to Samaria so that they may minister to them the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:5-16 NKJV)
In Acts chapter 10, Cornelius and his household were simultaneously Born-again and Baptized in the Holy Spirit when Peter preached to them, then they were baptized in water. Peter repeats the encounter with the other Apostles in Jerusalem in Acts chapter 11.
Finally, in the City of Ephesus Paul saw certain disciples who were only baptized with John the Baptist but never experienced being Born-again or being Baptized with the Holy Spirit. They haven’t even heard about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. After Paul asked them and found out their spiritual state. Paul preached Jesus to them they were saved then baptized in water as Born-again Christians then when Paul laid hands on them they received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 19:17 NKJV).
Do you see how Scripture clearly teaches the different experiences we must encounter as believers? It’s not my opinion! Luke is the one who recorded all of the Acts of the Apostles and how they were led by the Holy Spirit the Evangelize the world. Therefore, when Jesus said, if then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, HOW MUCH MORE WILL YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER GIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT TO THOSE WHO ASK HIM! (Luke 11:13 NKJV)
ASK for it… SEEK IT…KEEP KNOCKING on Heavens Door for this incredible experience. It’s yours!!! Your Heavenly Father desires to give it to you more than you desire to go to the Mall and give good gifts to your children. God just used me to point out how to experience it now the ball is in your court ASK, SEEK, and KNOCK! You will RECEIVE IT, you will FIND IT, and IT WILL BE OPEN for you to experience it!
May God bless you to encounter this experience in Jesus’ mighty name amen.
