God blesses his children in many ways. Often, we notice material blessings; a nice home, cars and high priced boats or planes are symbols of success. If a person has a loving family and friends, we are right to perceive God is showering them with blessings. Surely, if a person has good health, we consider that as one of God’s blessings of protection. It is far too easy to envy such people.
How many people would envy those who suffer? Paul describes those who suffer for their faith in his letter to the church in Philippi. “…and he has blessed you. Not only do you have faith in Christ, but you suffer for him. You saw me suffer, and you still hear about my troubles. Now you must suffer in the same way (Philippians 1:29-30 CEV).” God “blessed” Paul and these believers. Their enemies persecuted them. God blessed them. The blessings far outweighed suffering.
