Martin Luther was responsible for one third (1/3)of all the books published in the German language in the first half of the sixteenth century. Why was this? Luther saw that by writing he could spread the message of the gospel and the joy of the Reformation.
By reading people would grow in grace and the church of Jesus Christ would be built up and strengthened. Christian literature has been a sign of vitality in the people of God.
John Knox another great Christian activist saw the importance of putting his ideas into print that they might be spread. Richard Baxter and Cotton Mather were also prolific authors.
What books can be more important than those which have as their goal the glory of God and the transformation of our lives into the image of Jesus Christ and the reaching of men and women with the gospel.
"Reading maketh a full man" said Bacon. He meant reading in general. Reading promotes maturity.
When teaching and exhorting gifts are exercized in writing, they can edify and encourage us even though we may be far apart in time and space. By means of Christian literature you can introduce others to the gospel. Books can go where you can not go.
We must balance our Biblical reading as well
as our theological reading. Read good commentaries that shed light on the text of scripture, i.e. the light that comes from God's word.
We should read a variety of biographical and historical books.
Christ reveals his transforming grace in the biographies of his saints. Church history shows us the good and the bad in peoples lives and doctrine how the church has resolved problems and past mistakes.
Devotional reading- Read books that stir the soul to greater devotion to God. Our spirit can become like a piano out of tune. It cannot produce the melody praise.
