Christ is God’s one and only begotten son. A divine being, loving and obedient to the father, humble and invested with supernatural powers. He co-existed from the very beginning with the father and took part in the creation.
His pre-mortal existence and divinity
Recall his conversation with the Jews;
Christ: Your father Abraham was so happy that he would see my coming, he saw it and rejoiced.
Jews: You are not even 50 years old yet, how then did you see Abraham?
Christ: Before Abraham was created, I existed. (John 8:56-58)
From this short illustration, we can see that Christ had a pre-mortal life. He was already in existence before he came to the world. John also supports this fact that; Christ was there from the foundation of the world. He was the word used in the creation of the universe. He was God in himself and was with the father. There was nothing created without him. Both spiritual and physical things were created by him. He is life and that life is the light of us mortals. The light shines in us and disposes every darkness within and around us, so that we are not overcome by the darkness. What a gracious gift!
His mortal existence and mission
This was predicted in the Old Testament by many ancient prophets. He was to come and save his people from their sins, break the yoke of bondage in their lives (Isaiah 61:1). He started his ministry at the official age of 30. He came with salvation, redemption and reconciled us back to the father; he finished his earthly mission at the age of 33. In the revelation given to John after Christ had died , rose and enter into his glory, he said; “ I am the first and the last, the one that is alive, who was dead and will continue to live forever, I hold the keys of hell and death’’. He perfected the work of our salvation and sits at the right hand of God mediating on our behalf. He is indeed a divine gift! Shalom.
