I think the whole concept behind the film, “The Matrix” is brilliant. You spend your whole life plugged in to a system that has you deluded into believing you are having a great time and all the while it is sucking the very life out of you. Then when you die it flushes you away.
For the last few weeks I’ve been working as an order picker in a warehouse. Without doubt, it is a case of what I call, “scientific management gone mad”. Everything to do with the job is numbers. Total picks, total items, line average pick rate, hours worked, total items picked, % pick rate. If you don’t hit the numbers, boy do you hear about it.
Fortunately for me I was just an agency worker, so I wasn’t an employee of that system, but I had to still perform in the job as though I were. The other night (we work 2pm to 10pm) I got to thinking, “we are all in bondage to a system that we don’t even know exists”. Hence, “The Matrix” connection.
The only reason I know about the system we are in at work is because the Lord helped me see it. I went to University as a mature student to study workplace learning and development and then got a job in local government. That’s how I go to see the work system more clearly.
However, it’s only having come to Canada and worked as an agency worker in several different locations that I have come to see the magnitude and power of the work system. I have come to believe that one of the reasons we are having economic woes is so that the Lord’s people can see the work system for what it really is, He is setting us free from the delusion brought about by prosperous ease and surfeit of food.
He is setting us free from the work system so that we will not be caught up in its sins and share in its judgement.
The work system may have brought us relative prosperity in the past, but now that the economic pressure is on, the human cost has become astronomic; it’s becoming unbearable. And herein lies the problem. Our current woes in the workplace are setting us up for what we workers think will be freedom and revived prosperity under the New World Order.
Because work is becoming so demanding and the rewards becoming so scarce, we are going to be looking and longing for a new way to live on earth. We will be looking for a “saviour”, a man who will set us free from our bondage to the work system.
I think this man will be a, “Charlemagne” type character. He will probably base all his actions on the Old Testament. I can imagine him announcing a “jubilee” year when everything that has been “lost” by the working classes is “restored”.
For me personally, I think the Lord has allowed me to be treated harshly in the workplace for several reasons including; learning to trust Him not men, learning to serve people in difficult circumstances, overcoming my natural tendencies to get angry and frustrated when in this kind of environment and seeing the plight of working men and women.
As far as the Lord’s people in the workplace are concerned, I think now is the time He is asking us if we want the red pill or the blue pill. Do we want to remain in our delusion that everything will work out right in the end, if we just hang in there long enough, or do we want to know how deep the “rabbit hole” of evil in this world really goes?
