It was Christmas Eve and I sat in the Laundromat waiting for
my clothes to dry. I watched a small child romping and
playing with his toy. He walked to where I was seated and I
spoke to him.
“Hello,” I said “Do you know whose birthday it is?”
“Mine,” he replied.
“We will be celebrating a special birthday. It is the birthday
of Jesus.”
I had been depressed and brooding over my circumstances
all week.
“I’ve got something for you.” He said and ran to his car.
He returned with a small toy in his hand and gave it to me.
“Is this for me?” I asked in surprise.
“Yes,” he replied with a beautiful smile on his face.
If he would sit still long enough I would love to tell him
about the birth of Jesus, I thought. I just said a prayer for his
mother and him. I probably had more than he did; yet the
mention of Jesus caused him to want to give to others.
God chose this child to remind me that the reason for the
season is JESUS. It is more blessed to give than to receive.
This is a lesson we could all learn.
There is a special meaning for me in this gift.
“OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES.”
In the hustle and bustle of shopping sprees we lose sight of this joyous season. Jesus is the reason for this season. CHRISTmas. The joy of Christmas is not wrapped up in gold or silver. He was wrapped in swaddling cloth and God’s love. It’s about God’s love and the joy of sharing it.
