Are You Guilty of Reckless Words?

EVERYONE is guilty of being self-absorbed at some point. Maybe it is a continual selfish bad habit of self-pity, or maybe it is just an occasional lapse of good character. But when it happens, and we realize it, the conviction and embarrassment over our lack of compassion and insight can be humbling.

Speaking without thinking is a good sign that we have fallen prey to the old, “Foot In Mouth” disease. After the regrettable words are out of our mouth, they seem to hang frozen in the air for all to see and judge. Those present look at us with quizzical eyes, our brain gets stuck in the “Did I really say that? Did I really say that Out Loud?” cycle, and you run in shame for the nearest snow bank.

Perspective is key. What seems like a big issue, pain, or trial to us is often nothing when we compare it to the pain of a person who just lost their house or their spouse. We need to practice compassion.

God knows what we can handle and what our neighbor can bear. Individual trials and who is carrying the heaviest load is not what I am trying to write about; it is not the point I am trying make. Reckless words of insensitivity are the thing I am trying to address.

Dear Reader,
Can you walk in another person’s shoes for this one day? Will you reflect on THEIR life; maybe they have had a recent trial that has left them down in the dumps. Maybe the trail happened years ago but is still affecting them today. Pray for them. Offer to serve or help them. Note that you are not the only one having a hard time. For one day, make your problems of little significance when compared to this individual you are loving on and helping. By helping them you will be in turn helping yourself.

Proverbs 12:18
Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Proverbs 21:23
Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble

Proverbs 17:28
Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.
Psalm 141:3
Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.

Proverbs 10:19
When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
