Give us You Spirit again, Lord
Like a mighty rushing wind
On my life now to descend
Fiery cloven tongues I say
Be placed on me life today
Show what I ought to be,
From all evil set me free
My I be sacred day by day
With your will not to stray
Freely speak to one and all
Who by faith receive the call
Always to be of one accord
As I worship Thee Dear Lord
As I wait for Your withdraw
To only answer Heavens call
Give us Your Spirit again, Lord
I once read a very interesting book, authored by Dr. John R Rice, entitled, " The Acts of the Holy Spirit" What a fitting title, that was. ( Acts 2:1-4 )
Truly, this "upper room" marked the beginning of the church, guided by the Holy Spirit. ( Acts 2: 41-47 )
Guided once again by the Holy Spirit, the new church laid the ground work for the successful church doctrine throughout history. Included with this new doctrine, was the main stream of the gospel ( 1 Cor 15:1-4 )
So, what part does the Holy Spirit play in our lives, from the very beginning to today's true church ? Again, one must go straight to God's Holy scripture. ( Genesis 1:2 ) ( Job 33:4 ) ( John 16:8 ) ( Luke 1:35 ) Romans 8:11 ) ( Romans 8:16-17 ) ( Jeremiah 29:11 ) ( Titus 3:5 )
Shortly before leaving this world, for the portals of Heaven, Jesus gave His decuples a promise. He said that He would pray the Father that the Father would send them a comforter, the Holy Spirit. ( Acts 1:5-8 ) Now, the Holy Spirit is part of God Himself, so the Holy Spirit has always been prevalent. Jesus also said that this new found Holy Spirit would teach them all things and would bring to their minds all things, that He had said to them. ( John 14:25-26 ) You see, these disciples would be going through a lot, humanly speaking. So, they would need a good reminder, as to what Jesus had taught them.
What about today's church ? Now the Holy Spirit speaks to us through the scriptures, in the exact manner that Jesus talked to his followers. That's why it's important not to neglect reading the Bible, as the Holy Spirit helps us understand what we read. The Holy Spirit will also teach us, in what we read. ( John 16:12-14 ) ( Luke 24:45-49 )
Yes, the Holy Spirit, is a person and He wants to live in our hearts. He wants to speak, through the scripture, and empower us for our daily walks with God.
So, don't let the Holy Spirit down, please, ( Acts 4:30 ) ( Matt 12"31-33) ( 2 Cor 5:16-18 ) ( Psalm 52:1-3 ) ( 1 John 2:19-27) as the Holy Spirit's functions are to bestow gifts to the believer, convict the believer of sin, comfort the believer in times of trouble and help plead our prayers to the Father, when we just can't pray like we would like too.
Author's Post Script
I can't help but ponder the fond memories of those old "brush-arbor" revival meetings where the "Amen's" and the "Hallelujah's" echoed, as the spirit led. I still remember those strong, but simple, evangelistic teachings. Additionally, in support of those evangelistic messages, was our old fashioned church altar. I still believe in that "Old Time Religion". I pray now, since retiring from my secular profession, that God will hide me behind the cross and use this compilation to give encouragement and strength to the Christians as well as draw the sinners into a saving knowledge of Christ Jesus.
