TOPIC: OVERCOMING FEAR AND ANXIETY
TEXTS: Deut 31:6-8, 1 Sam 17:8-11
INTRODUCTION: Life is a battlefield full of the unknown. The choices we make today make or mar us tomorrow. Tomorrow is unknown, tomorrow is untold. Tomorrow cannot be predicted. We must move through life one step at a time from God’s perspective. Fear and anxiety about tomorrow limits what we can accomplish for ourselves and God.
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
1. What is fear and anxiety?
*Fear is an unpleasant feeling of anxiety or apprehension caused by the presence or anticipation of danger (Job 3:25-26)
*Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness or agitation about something that is going to happen.
*Fear is False Expectation Appearing Real.
*Fear is a spirit(2 Tim 1:7)
2.Give practical life situations that make us anxious and afraid?
*Basic needs of life(Matt 6:25-32):
(a).What to eat
(b).What to drink
(c).What to wear
*Fear of travelling, swimming, starting small, pre-mature death etc.
3. What are the problems that come with fear and anxiety?
*Sin (Rom 14:23)
*Torment (1 John 4:18)
*Stagnancy(1 Sam 17:8-11): You wouldn’t be able to confront your challenges.
*Danger of Hell(Rev 21:8)
4. How can we overcome fear and anxiety?
*Recognise the fact that fear is not of God(2 Tim 1:7)
*Pray to God about your fears (Neh 6:9-14; Phil 4:6)
*Encourage yourself with God’s word (1 Sam 30:6)
*Know the God you serve (Jer 29:11, Dan 11:32b,1 John 4:4)
CONCLUSION: Fear is not of God. We must do all within our power to eradicate fear from our hearts. God has assured us of His eternal presence and comfort. Let us hold on to His uncompromising promises. He will never fail us.
