I came across a blog in which a young man tried to explain the words of Jesus Christ when He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life”. He explained this passage from an intellectual point of view, and unfortunately he missed the real message of Jesus because the words of Christ are spiritual.
We usually think about the word “life” as the daily routines of being alive (thinking ,eating, shopping, working, etc.), but when Jesus talks about life, he is talking about something completely different!
“Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing… Do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Jesus is speaking)
For Jesus, life is more than getting cool clothes and great food. The Lord tells us not to worry about food, drink, or clothes, which we consider not only a physical need, but the very purpose of life. People who do not have a relationship with God seek those things, because they think that meet our needs is what life is about. Nevertheless the Lord says that they are an addition to real life. They are not life in themselves; they are a secondary part of life.
Jesus told us to seek His kingdom, in other words to seek His will so we can have real life. He will add those secondary things, because He knows we need them.
If accumulating wealth, eating and drinking are not life, then what is?
Deuteronomy 30: 15-18 tells us what real Life is:
“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the LORD your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess.
But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess. I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”
God associates life with good and death with evil. That is because godly behavior will bring about life, while evil doing or sin will bring about spiritual death (the wages of sin is death). People think that drugs, alcohol, partying or promiscuous behavior are funny stuff. They think they are living a great life doing what pleases them, but a person who lives in this way, is in reality dead in his sins. Jesus says that what people call life is truly death.
Life in the eyes of Jesus means closeness to God, that is, to have a relationship with Him. When we love God, choose His will over ours, and obey His law; it leads us to life. Because of our sinful nature, the only way we can obey God is by trusting in Jesus Christ. For more on what it means to trust in Jesus, read “Is there any other Way to Heaven?”
God gives us freedom to choose between life and death. When we are drawn away from God, we have embraced death. This death is not only spiritual death (because our spirit cannot live apart from God) but many times physical as well. With death comes a curse. Why? Because when we decide to reject God we have rejected the source of all good things. Who will bring about our happiness, our success? Who will teach us to make wise decisions? Who will help us when we are in despair? Who will comfort us in times of trouble? Nobody will. We are on our own. We are left to our own wisdom and our own resources. Our sinful nature will defeat us because we are so frail, so stubborn and so foolish! Apart from Him we can do nothing worthy. On the other hand when we have fellowship with Him, he will bless us and our families.
He encourages you to obey His voice and cling to Him, for HE IS YOUR LIFE. He is the one who can lengthen your days on this earth and give you eternal life in heaven. He’ll give you a hope and a future.
Real life comes only from God through Jesus. A fulfilling, joyous, peaceful, precious true life can only be found in the arms of our Creator. Because only He can fit all the pieces of life’s puzzle together and make a wondrous landscape out of it. The life you have always dreamed of is closer to you than you imagine.
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me.”
The Lord Almighty is knocking; will you open your heart? Will you let him give you true life?
