They say, “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!’’ We see it on billboards, posters, school banners created by students; School teachers and professors swear by the statement to encourage youth and students of all ages that the fact is without KNOWLEDGE we will not achieve our dreams and visions of becoming someone great. Its sounds good, it may be true to an extent if we believe it, but have you really given it some serious consideration to the cliché, “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER”.
The truth is KNOWLEDGE- is an acquaintance with a fact, a truth, a concept, a teaching or an object. And having KNOWLEDGDE of something doesn’t necessarily gives us power unless we actually go out and do what we learn about the thing we gain KNOWLEDGE of. KNOWLEDGE is just known information or facts until we do something with that information that will produce the power to do or to be successful.
The POWER part of KNOWLEDGE only becomes a reality when we move in the INFORMATION and REVELATION of the facts presented to us that’s of great importance to our success in life.
Known Facts and Poor Choices
In the Old Testament we have a clear example of God’s chosen people being unsuccessful because they did not do anything with the KNOWLEDGE of God’s will for their lives. God said through the Prophet Hosea;
1. My people are destroyed for lack of KNOWLEDGE.
2. Because you have rejected KNOWLEDGE,
3. I also will reject you from being priest for Me;
4. Because you have forgotten the law of Your God,
5. I also will forget your children (Hosea 4:6 NKJV)
If you have been a Christian long enough you probably heard the first clause of this verse, “My people are destroyed for lack of KNOWLEDGE”, in Hosea mentioned by some preachers who doesn’t explain the rest of the verse because they try to warn God’s people not to reject the Scriptures their sharing. It’s understandable, but they should explain the verse more thoroughly and not use it as a scare tactic.
However, to point out why God’s people are destroyed is because they;
1. Lacked KNOWLEDGE
2. They REJECTED KNOWLEDGE
3. They FORGOT the law (Word of) God
Their consequence is:
1. God rejects them
2. Then God rejects their children
When we are sitting under the teachings of God day in and day out, or on every Sunday as we go to church services we should begin to gain KNOWLEDGE of God’s Word and begin walking in line with what Scripture challenges us to apply and practice daily so we may experience the blessings of God in our lives.
Old Testament Facts
God had to deal harshly with His people in the Old Testament because every time they would cry out to Him He would deliver them and bless them then they would go right back to sinning deliberately and forget about what God did for them. You can read the Old Testament over and over and you would see the same pattern of God’s people living right, then they’re sinning, then judgment comes upon them and then God delivers them and then they’re sinning again. They never grow up and overcome the hang ups, the issues they’ve been dealing with individually and collectively as God’s people to do things God’s way.
The other disadvantage that I must point out is that they did not have the Holy Spirit in them individually that would have given them the added push to desire the DIVINE KNOWLEDGE of God and stay true to God till the end of their lives like we see the men and women of God do in the Old Testament.
Today, believers have the Grace and Mercy of God working on our behalf, and by Grace and Faith in Jesus Christ we have the Holy Spirit (THE SPIRIT OF KNOWLEDGE) in us to reveal to us the DIVINE KNOWLEDGE we need to do the will of God the Father. The Prophet Isaiah gave us the KNOWLEDGE of the operation of the Holy Spirit’s work inside the life of Jesus that we have available to us today. (See Isaiah 11:2 NKJV).
Paul’s Explanation of the SPIRIT OF KNOWLEDGE
Paul was taught by the Holy Spirit supernaturally (See, Ephesians 3:3-7 NKJV). Paul also spoke about the Holy Spirit who will teach us supernaturally about the DIVINE KNOWLEDGE of God. We will learn things by the Holy Spirit sharing them with us. Paul said;
1. For what man KNOWS the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? V.11a
2. Even so no one KNOWS the things of God except the Spirit of God. V. 11b
3. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, V.12a
4. That we might KNOW the things that have been freely given to us by God. V. 12b (1 Corinthians 2:11-12 NKJV)
Before I go on, I would like to point out 2 things here;
1. There is Human KNOWLEDGE
2. There is DIVINE KNOWLEDGE
Human beings will learn and come to KNOW things from a Humanistic view and apply Humanistic solutions to the problem. When it comes to Spiritual things we need the Holy Spirit to grant us that Divine KNOWLEDGE so we may apply the spiritual solution to our problems.
Paul said it this way;
1. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. V. 13
2. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he KNOW them, because they are spiritually discerned. V. 14 (1 Corinthians 2:13-14 NKJV)
When Paul was writing this letter to the Christians in the city of Corinth he tried to share how God reveals things to believers through the Holy Spirit, but to unbelievers they struggle with it because they don’t comprehend the spiritual point of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. But the Holy Spirit will reveal it to us.
For example, Jesus said, Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, (Matthew 5:44 NKJV). I know that I would never come to gain KNOWLEDGE of this principle and actually apply it as an unbeliever. It’s ridiculous to an unsaved person to do this—I even dare to say that many Christians are not applying this truth. My personal testimony is it took me 1 ½ year to finally forgive one of my enemies and begin praying for them after I came to learn about the topic of forgiveness. Only the DIVINE KNOWLEDGE of God is what persuaded me to live out this truth.
Different Levels of KNOWLEDGE
The reason the cliché “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER” doesn’t actually give us a full scope of truth is because we need to reevaluate it based on Biblical truth. To the world of education the cliché makes sense. But to the entire scope of living successfully in every area of our lives especially with God on earth we need to have a well rounded view of KNOWLEDGE we can learn and live by.
I love Vine’s Dictionary of Old and New Testament words. Vine drew out all the meanings of KNOW, KNOWN and KNOWLEDGE.
Know- is ginosko in the Greek (Strongs # 1097) which means to perceive, understand, recognize, gain KNOWLEDGE, realize, or come to KNOW. Ginosko is the KNOWLEDGE that has an inception, a progress, and an attainment. It’s a progressive act of learning or gaining KNOWLEDGE not actually having it entirely.
The second meaning of KNOW in Greek is- oida it suggests fullness of KNOWLEDGE. For example, Jesus was making a statement about who He was and how He honored God by the very works He did. Jesus went on to say, “Yet you have not KNOWN Him (Ginosko), but I KNOW Him (oida). (John 8:55a NKJV)
The religious leaders who were trying to stone Jesus for the comments He made after the woman caught in adultery incident came to this point of Him declaring that they did not KNOW the Father in Heaven, if they did they would not be out to destroy and kill Him. But that He KNOWS the Father.
We can KNOW that Jesus Heals, Forgives and Delivers people. But we could be blind or not KNOW how Jesus does it. Jesus tried His best to tell the religious leaders throughout the entire chapter that the Father sent Him to do these works. Jesus painted it many ways and they still didn’t come to KNOW Him or the mission that God gave Him (See John chapter 8). Jesus tried to give them the truth but they fought against it, which brings us to the third level of KNOWLEDGE.
Epiginosko- is a special participation in the object KNOWN, and gives greater weight to what is stated; Jesus said, you shall KNOW the truth, (Ginosko) (John 8:32 NKJV). Paul wrote, them that believe and KNOW the truth (Epiginosko) (1 Timothy 4:3 NKJV) Epiginosko lays stress on the participation part of us living out that truth.
Jesus said the secret to learning and gaining KNOWLEDGE (the truth of God’s word) is to ABIDE (See John 8:31-32 NKJV). ABIDE means reading, understanding what was read, then receiving Insight or KNOWLEDGE of what was said, and then living out what was said. Then we would experience the blessings of what we applied. It will materialize, and the promise of God will manifest itself in our lives.
The Spirit of Knowledge
Jesus said, however, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. (V. 13)
He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. (V. 14)
All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. (V.15) (John 16:13-15 NKJV)
Whatever Jesus said in John chapter 8 and throughout Scripture is what the Holy Spirit (THE SPIRIT OF KNOWLEDGE) will reveal to us. We shall KNOW the TRUTH. Are you ready to LEARN?
