Here is an email letter I wrote to a professional speaker I met at the LA Convention center. I think she was speaking about consulting and/or marketing and I was wondering how she got involved in her career. This letter was a follow up to getting further information into my area of interest. After praying about the GLAC membership I had second thoughts and changed my direction because I didn't believe I was going to get a career in professional speaking this easily and the money would have been wasted. Within a year I ran across the opportunity the Lord had prepared for me. It was remaking my hauling business into a better and more profitable business by getting a website and implementing some powerful marketing strategies.

Remember me? We met at the Los Angeles Times Small Business Strategies workshop at the LA Convention Center. I took you aside and you gave me your kindest attention and encouragement for over 45 minutes about getting started in a professional speaking career. Well, I recently joined GLAC. Sorry I missed you at the last meeting in Cerritos. I asked about you but Jan Huber said you could't make it.
The reason I'm writing you is that Mike Rounds is having a meeting this Saturday from what I understand and I was thinking about attending it. However, I need his email and or phone number to contact him. We spoke to each other briefly in Cerritos and I was encouraged.
I also called Dottie Walters the other day and she told me about her Master Seminar Weekend. Do you know anything about the effectiveness of her training? I've read parts of her book "Speak and Grow Rich" and what she had to say made a lot of sense. I've also spoken to a Tom Antion and he promoted a course that he put together designed to incorporate humor and all the elements that make up a professional presentation. He went on to say that planners and corporations don't hire professional speakers they hire problem solvers who are experts in their field. He told me to forget about everything I've learned in my college speech curriculum and Toastmasters because the rules of the game have changed.
Food for thought. Certainly, I could ask ten different professional speakers about how to get started in this business and probably get 5-10 different answers. GLAC seems like a great networking group and I'm sure I'm going to learn more and more about this business, i.e. professional speaking, training and consulting. However, as Tom said GLAC may be the slower way. I'll probably have to invest some money into coaching one-on-one to really get a topic together, rehearsed and polished to professional standards as well as some guidance in marketing. I sense GLAC will provide the on going marketing knowledge but just how much preparation or training I'll get with the actual hands on, get-up-and-face-the-audience experience I'll need is not really clear to me yet. It has been years since I've given a live presentation or speech.
Suze please give me your feedback and I do hope you are having a most blessed Thanksgiving. Look forward to seeing you soon.
With warm regards,
