The this poem reflects the idea that we can be abandoned by so called good men only to walk alone among wicked men but in doing so may we never sin in word or deed.
"A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit." Proverbs 15:4
If ever I walk alone
in this world of wicked men
may love be spoken and sown
so that I might never sin;
and if I should slip in speech
may a pardon from heav'n above
mend my spirit from a breach
and teach me more of God' love.
