Who to God a likeness bears save him the chief of heaven's host?
Who His power most plenty wields save but grace and Holy Ghost?
Ranked companion of princes arch and listed each by name,
high fellow of the guild of spirits and the morning stars of fame,
Michael, who by order is the Lord of flame and wind ,
who vanquished as a dragon the unctioned Cherub when he sinned.
Pneumatic brawn with heaven's greater glory,
he smote and cast from heaven him who made the skies turn hoary,
and did as well before the flesh of God had e'er in triumph risen,
held the serpent firm for Daniel's prayer and its rewarded vision.
This champion of the unwalled city and guardian of the camp,
thwarts its lurking foes who hide beyond the lighted lamp,
for plated with celestial armor and double blade in hand,
he sets his feet in either realm and stands o'er promised land.
And though by his creation God did him complete outfit,
he was endowed a measure more when man with God did victor sit,
for then proceeded such a power that captive took the captor,
and made of death a mortal's hope for divinity and rapture.
So by this knight and noble, this angelic creature fair,
the voice that Job once sharp accused and God did even dare,
was muted from the ears of Him who judges all with justice true,
and sealed to rage's end and fire where hypocrites and scorners stew.
Might and valor are the virtues of this principal of all created powers,
and more so yet by passioned blood makes the devil tumble like the last of Noah's showers,
keeping safe of Eden's pilgrims both their breath and bone,
serving with his legions loyal 'till they're gathered 'round the throne.
