The following is an email letter I wrote to my friend Tom when I lived in a Hollywood apartment at 2018 N. Highland Ave.
Saturday September 9, 2000
Greetings to you brother. I'm happy to see that you are diligently studying to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
I recently ran across an article on Dr. Campolo that I thought you should read and forward to others in your circle.
Tony is no theological slouch and neither was Arius, a heretic in the early church.
Now as I recall you introduced me to this guy back in the early to mid 1980's at Covenant church in Stockton. You may or may not remember. I think you were impressed by this guy's manner of speaking, his passion, humor and wit. In fact we watched a film at the church where Tony was giving a presentation and I think it was the one you listed.
Anyway, Tony is a sociologist and associate pastor of an American Baptist church. Yes, they are liberal although Tony would probably call himself an evangelical. He's in a position to lead many astray because he is persuasive and popular, a passionate speaker and a prolific author. Personally, I don't think his books should be allowed in Christian book stores based on what this article reveals about his beliefs.
Just one example: Tony says, "Isn't God's message to sinful humanity that he sees in each of us a divine nature of such worth that he sacrifices his own son so that our divine potentialities might be recognized?"
Now this is just part of his psycho babble and mixed up thinking. The link below will have actual quotes from his books showing wherein he is heretical.
His theology has elements of truth mixed with serious error which makes him all the more dangerous for like Satan he comes as an angel of light. Cults are easy to detect for the most part because they are unsound on the most fundamental and essential elements of the gospel but somebody like Dr. Campolo carries with him an air of respectability and authority in the evangelical community because of his passion and academic degree and standing as an associate pastor.
The link below which although is rather lengthy will be worth your perusal.
A Reformed minister co-wrote the article I believe. Please read it and let me know what you think. Most of your Reformed brethren probably know little or nothing about this man but perhaps you have some friends or aquaintances in Arminian circles who like this guy. LET THEM BEWARE!
The man is dangerous in my opinion and he is a wolf in sheep?s clothing infiltrating the flock of God.
I think it is high time we inform the true followers and all those who profess the name of our Lord Jesus Christ of those teachers in the Christian church who do not teach sound doctrine. Those without the church are easily identified but many have crept in unawares.
I've thought about putting a manual together that would list the various false teachers guilty of heresy like Robert Schuller, Benny Hinn, Robert Tilton, Jimmy Swaggert, Kenneth Copeland, Oral Roberts etc. If such a list could be circulated and updated as new prominent false teachers enter the Christian circle then we would know beforehand who such people were. They would be marked out, identified and shunned as those we are not to have fellowship with.
There needs to be a consensus among the faithful that these leaders are like Hank Hannegraff has said making many false claims and deceiving people through their radio broadcasts, tape ministries, and so called"revival meetings."
In my study of Jude
(Read this letter carefully and listen to the study from the
www.FamilyRadio.com website. this sutyd is from a very good teacher who explains the book comparing scripture with scripture) It is not given by Harold Camping. Mr. Camping teaches Acts and 1 Corinthians and you will profit immensely from this study.
...I'm reminded of such ungodly men and that we are commanded to
contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. There is not mystery as to what this faith is. It is the common salvation that Jesus preached and the apostles. One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism. Ephesians 4:5 The word contend means to fight for or to struggle as in a wrestling match.
We must defend that body of doctrine found in the Bible that is "sound doctrine." Titus 2:1 We are not to try to see their point of view but rather to stop their mouths and rebuke them sharply. Titus 1:9-11 These men subvert families and divivde churches. Yet we are to love and show patience to those who hold to false doctrine in ignorance. They are to be pitied.
Now we ourselves must be careful not to be infected with the contagion of their leprosy. We in an effort to help others must keep our garments undefiled (Rev 3:4) like the O. T. priests knowing that nothing defiled will enter into heaven. Rev. 21:27
Too many people who call themselves Christians are afraid to contend because it is considered impolite and divisive. We are told that it is unloving to quarrel with others. Well in the matter of doctrinal truth and I mean essential doctrine that one must hold to in order to be saved we must contend or fight for the gospel of our Lord. He who does not fight for the truth is no friend of Jesus Christ.
These things I affirm and encourage you to also affirm that we may as the apostle Paul said "Be perfect, be of comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you." 2 Cor. 13:11 AMEN
