The Spirit of Understanding

There is 7 Dimensions of the Holy Spirit that God desires for us to know that we have available to us at all times. The 7 Areas are;

1. The Spirit of the Lord resting upon us (Isaiah 11:2 NKJV)
2. The Spirit of Wisdom
3. And Understanding (The Spirit of Understanding)
4. The Spirit of Counsel
5. And Might (The Spirit of Might)
6. The Spirit of Knowledge
7. And of the fear of the Lord

The fact that Isaiah the Prophet predicted these Areas of Anointing upon Jesusí life and ministry on earth is key to knowing that we too will be able to access and learn to develop our relationship to the Holy Spirit to operate in the same capacity.

The Holy Spirit vs. Spiritual Gifts and Ministry Gifts

I want to clarify that the Anointing of the Holy Spirit with these 7 Dimensions is designed by God to help us live on the earth as Jesus lived on the earth and is not to be confused with the list of Spiritual Gifts and Ministry Gifts given to us by Paul in Romans 12:6-8/ 1 Corinthians 12:8-11,28/ Ephesians 4:11.

Why? Because Paul clarified that it is the Holy Spirit who manifests or bring about these gifts to a believer as He desires (See, 1 Corinthians 12:11). Jesus gave us the Ministry Gifts (Ephesians 4:11). God appointed the Ministry Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:28). We must keep in mind that Ministry Gifts and Spiritual Gifts are designed for us to minister to other people.

The Prophet Isaiah said these attributes that come along with the Spirit of the Lord are;

1. Wisdom
2. Understanding
3. Counsel
4. Might
5. Knowledge
6. Fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2 NKJV)

In John chapters 14, 15, & 16, Jesus told His disciples that the Spirit of Truth, The Helper, The Comforter, and The Teacher will lead us, guide us, Comfort us, and show us things to come and so much more.

Whatís my point? We need to rightly divide the operation of the Holy Spirit so we wonít be standing by aimlessly wondering what we should do in any given situation that challenges us to respond in a Christian like manner. The list given to us by Isaiah is for our personal understanding of what we have inside of us aside from the Names and Titles given to us by Jesus in John Chapters 14, 15, and 16.

Making Sense of it

If we were to read all the lists given to us by Paul about Spiritual Gifts and Ministry Gifts we would not find (The Spirit of Understanding, Counsel and Might or The Spirit of the fear of the Lord). So this simply clarifies that Isaiah and Paul were speaking about different operations of the Holy Spirit. Theologians and Concordances may outline or classify all the attributes together--but The Holy Spirit will grant us revelation that these 7 Dimensions listed in Isaiah is totally different from those lists that Paul spoke about in the New Testament.

The Spirit of Understanding

Jesus was the most Understanding person on the face of the earth. He was trained by the Holy Spirit since the tender age of 12 and younger about Scripture that He left the religious Doctors amazed (See Luke 2:40-47 KJV). He Understood His disciples and their spiritual condition when they were faithless and perverse (Luke 9:40-48 KJV). He understood the religious leaders of His day and how spiritually blind they were and twisted in their theology (See Matthew 22:22-33 KJV, about the topic of Resurrection they had twisted). He also understood His own family and how He had trouble with His own brothers who doubted Him (See John 7:1-7 KJV). Jesus truly understood the people how they lacked a Good Shepherd.

The same Holy Spirit that trained Jesus during His youth to obtain a unique level of Divine Understanding is the same Holy Spirit that will train us to have the Divine Understanding we need to serve and worship God (Luke 2:47 KJV).

Praying for Divine Understanding

Paul gave us a lot of revelation about how he prayed for various churches. In the church at the city of Colosse he wrote how he prayed;
Do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all WISDOM and SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God (Colossians 1:9-10 NKJV).

In my last article I shared about the Spirit of Wisdom and how we are to access Godís Wisdom through the Holy Spirit. Here we see Paul praying for both WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING! They go hand-in-hand to discover the will of God so we may be able to walk in it. The Holy Spirit will unleash the Revelation needed when we request it. Paul gave us the key to accessing it by prayer.

We can use this prayer as an intercessory prayer to pray for others and our church. And we may personify it for ourselves by saying, Lord, fill us with the knowledge of Your will in all WISDOM and SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING so we may walk worthy toward you being productive and active as Christians and in ministry in Jesusí name, amen.

You see, we will only get what we ask for the reason for Christians being unsuccessful is because we fail in the area of properly praying for things that were given to us in Scripture. The Bible is full of prayers that we need to pray to experience Godís bestóHis blessings.

Divine Understanding vs. Human Understanding

The Life Application Bible defines UNDERSTANDING- to comprehend, realize, or be familiar with; discernment.

One of the biggest steps to being a productive Christian is to practically do what Solomon advised us to do in (Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV);

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own UNDERSTANDING (v. 5)

In all your ways acknowledge HIM, and HE shall direct your paths (v. 6)

Let me give you some practical examples. I always wanted to play Lotto and for fear of God I never did because I read a chick tract that spoke against it. So one day I bought a ticket after buying it I felt guilty. I said Lord I will never do it again. I think I did a second time. I confessed my sin and never did it again.

In the summer of 2009, my Christian brother bought a Grocery Store so I initially worked on it renovating it for free doing electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and Carpentry. He had a Lotto machine and printed out a ticket and said I donít have money to pay you maybe God can bless you who knows? I went home thinking about it and justifying why should I win Lottoóit will be a reward for a good work done for my brother, I could give my church 10% plus, I could help so many people and the minute I came to this thought the HOLY SPIRIT quote Proverbs 3:5-6 to me, Donít lean to your own UNDERSTANDING of how Iím going to bless you.

Sure enough I did not win Lotto. But the spiritual lesson learned here by the SPIRIT of UNDERSTANDING caught my attention as to my learning to trust the Lord.

Human Understanding will debate and fight and say well God could use the Lotto system to financially reward you so you may be a blessing to others. Godís WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING will challenge you to TRUST GOD for His Divine method of financial blessing. For example, when God came to Solomon in a dream He asked Solomon what he wanted as king. Solomon asked for WISDOM. God was pleased with Solomon that He said to Solomon just for that Iím going to give you Riches and Divine protection to go along with the Wisdom (1 Kings 3:3-15 NKJV).

Jesus said seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness and all material blessings will be added to our lives (Matthew 6:33 NKJV). When Jesus said this it was in response to His teaching about desiring material things above God (Matthew 6:24), then Jesus begins to be graphic about the material things we wish for or worry about (Matthew 6:25-32), giving us the final spiritual solution to being rewarded by seeking Godís kingdom first. Solomon sought the interest of Godís people first and when you go on to read his life story he eventually OVER TIME became the riches king that ever lived. Whatís my point?

We need to access the WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING of the Holy Spiritís nature to lead us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not be half-hearted or hard-hearted about serving God. Godís WISDOM is found in Godís Word. Solomonís example and Jesusí teaching is clear enough for us to apply ourselves to fear God and do it HIS way. We can analize it, rationalize it, and make all kinds of excuses for whatever we desire to get from God but we will be discourage, and disappointed every time if we do not seek God about our particular situation first and find Scripture that will show us how He does things.

Solomon said, a man who wanders from the way of UNDERSTANDING will rest in the assembly of the dead (Proverbs 21:16).

There is no WISDOM nor UNDERSTANDING nor COUNSEL against the Lord (Proverbs 21:30).

No matter how we look at things from a human perspectiveóif itís not in Scripture rightly interpreted and practically applied we will end up being unproductive (with other spiritually dead people who think they are serving God).

An Excellent Spirit

Solomon was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write, a man (or woman) of UNDERSTANDING is of an EXCELLENT SPIRIT (Proverbs 17:27b KJV).
Daniel was defined by the Queen of Babylon during the rule Belshazzar (Nebuchadnezzarís son) of having an excellent spirit, being full of WISDOM, and UNDERSTANDING in interpreting dreams, hard sentences, and dissolving doubts (Daniel 5:11-12 KJV).

Daniel UNDERSTOOD where he was, why he was in captivity in Babylon, and how he was divinely appointed to serve the Babylonians kings throughout the time he was there. He learned under the most difficult moments in his political career when he was destined to perish how he had to seek God for divine WISDOM and UNDERSDTANDING to dreams and visions to share with the king who had them and give them the interpretation and saved his own life and the lives of all the wise men in Babylon (See, Daniel 2:1-49).

When we gain Divine UNDERSTANDING the things we encounter will make more sense. More Biblical sense than what we would evaluate it if we did not have the Divine WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING of God. People will begin seeing us like the people of Danielís day a man or woman of an excellent spirit.

So access the UNDERSTANDING from the Spirit of UNDERSTANDING (THE HOLY SPIRIT) so HE may take us thru the needed training to be Christians with an excellent spirit full of WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING. Amen.
