Short Stories
Cain said
to Abel
his brother,
'Let us
go out
to the
field'.
[Genesis 4:8]
*****************
Time: Roughly 30 years after ......
The Incident Of The Apple.
Place: Assignment Room in the Heavenly
Realm.
Characters: Assignment Angel Stricternico, and
Angel Sylvestor (before he became a
Warrior Angel).
________________
"This is....a VERY IMPORTANT...
ASSIGNMENT!"
Angel Stricternico
glared over his sharply curved reading glasses above
the Assignment Folder. Angel Stricternico's wings stiffened, just a bit;
they were egg-shell
white and looked as
if they had been starched.
"But.....I never HAD an assignment, BEFORE!"
Angel Sylvestor was swinging his short, chubby legs and plump bare feet at
the back of his big uncomfortable chair.
It was making an
irritable banging sound.
"NONETHELESS!"
Angel Stricternico
pursed his lips; his
eyes were a very pale
blue, and resembled
egg shells.
"Are ya sure it's
got MY NAME...
on it?"
Sylvestor was biting
on the nail of his short, plump left forefinger, and stretching his chubby
little neck: squinting
over at the Assignment File.
"I've never DID
nothin', BEFORE!"
Up until
now, Sylvestor had spent most of his days napping on a
cloud, and eating apple-crum cakes
and honey-nut bread.
"SYLVESTOR ALLEN,
I DON'T HAVE TIME
FOR THIS!"
Angel Stricternico
shouted. He pursed
his lips again.
"Now.....LISTEN!
You are to GO to
the FRONT GATE...
and greet ABEL,
the first HUMAN
to Heaven!"
Sylvestor's plump
little mouth turned
down. He squinted
at the air: biting
on his chubby forefinger nail again.
"But........I dunno
know where the Front
Gate......IS...!"
Angel Stricternico
sighed impatiently,
and pulled out the
left drawer of his
huge, overpiled desk.
"HERE!
HERE is a....MAP!"
Angel Stricternico
thrust it at the little
angel: it hit Sylvestor on his bulbous of a nose.
Sylvestor grabbed
at the big piece of
colored paper with
both hands: looking
as if he were trying
to shield himself from
a big rock; his little
feet swung up in the
air.
Angel Stricternico
was already busy again reading his
Assignment File
folder. He had a big frown on his long, narrow face,
and was pursing his
lips again. Then he peered up over
his sharp pointy glasses.
"NOW!
BE THERE SHAPPLY
AT FOUR O'CLOCK!"
"But......I don't
even know.....what TIME it is!"
Sylvestor squinted
at his new supervisor;
he was about to cry,
and his plump little
face was getting all
red and swollen; his
chubby short legs
were now banging
even louder against
the big oversized chair.
"NO EXCUSES!"
The tall, narrow-
winged angel slammed
out his drawer again
and pulled out a big
plastic watch. The
watch face had a
picture of a moon
and stars on it; it
was dark blue and yellow.
"HERE!
Now.......when you
GET THERE, I want
you to GREET him
WARMLY, and then
ESCORT him to the
Throne ROOM!"
Sylvestor was beginning to sniff loudly; he was still
chomping on his little
fingernail.
"But.......I 'never even
BEEN....to the Throne
ROOM!"
Angel Stricternico
pulled out his big
drawer again.
Out came another map.
"And, I WANT YOU
to make....PLEASANT
CONVERATION...
with him!"
Angel Stricternico
pointed sharply at
the sniffing, red-faced angel.
"But.......I don't
even know.....what
he LOOKS like! How
do I know...it's HIM?
WHAT do HUMANS
LOOK......LIKE?"
Sylvestor was now
beginning to sob; his
plump little shoulders
were moving up and
down: even his little halo tilted to one side.
"HE'LL BE THE
ONLY ONE AT THE
GATE! HUMANS
ARE VERY HAIRY,
AND DON'T HAVE
WINGS! YOU'LL KNOW HIM
WHEN YOU SEE HIM!"
Angel Stricternico
shouted. He slapped
his big file folder
on his desk, and glared over his sharply framed glasses again.
"But......what do
I TALK about.....?"
Sylvestor continued
sobbing; the two
big maps in his little
hands were getting
all crinkled, and
sweaty.
"I don't even know...
HUMAN!"
Angel Stricternico
sighed sharply,
and squeezed shut his big
egg-shelled-shaped
eyes.
Suddenly there was
a Low Rumble from
the Ceiling Above.
Both angels looked up;
Sylvestor's mouth
was turned down
even more, and tears
were rolling down
his little plump face:
continuing to sniff
and shake.
Silence.
Rumble.
Rumble.
Angel Stricternico
stared, at attention,
at the Ceiling. He
frowned and nodded:
continued to nod
several times.
Then the Rumbling
Stopped.
Angel Stricternico
nodded for the last
time, and then pursed
his lips: glaring back
at the little angel.
"ALRIGHT!"
He pointed.
"NOW!
LISTEN!"
Angel Stricternico
pursed his lips again.
He pointed.
"You have....
been assigned...
a BUDDY!"
Sylvestor Allen's
face immediately
turned up in a big bright smile. He bit on his plump lower lip,
and his shoulders
stopped shaking, although he continued
to sniff.
Angel Stricternico
frowned: shaking
his long narrow head.
Even his high halo
was narrow, and
very starched-looking.
He called out sharply
in a voice that blew
a big wind through
Sylvestor's fuzzy,
mousy-light-brown
curly hair.
"ANGEL BRIGGUND!"
Pause.
Another angel suddenly appeared
in the Assignment-Room doorway; he was a bit
larger and taller than Sylvestor,
and had a mane of
frizzy blond hair, and
real fluffy, though matted wings. He was all out of breath, and
wearing a flinkering force-shield armor, and carrying an
overly-huge lighted
sword.
Pant.
Pant.
"Yeah, SIR?"
Pant.
Pant.
Angel Stricternico
shouted.
"TAKE THIS NEW...
BUDDY OF YOURS.....
AND GO MEET
ABEL!"
Both Sylvestor
and Briggund looked
at one another, and
then squinted at their
supervisor.
"WHO'S...........
Abel?"
Angel Stricternico groaned,
and put his long narrow
head in his hands.
Seventeen hours later,
Sylvestor, Briggund,
and Abel were all squinting
down at the map of The Throne
Room, looking up, shaking their
heads (one very hairy, two with
halos).......and
pointing to the right.

And
when
they
were in
the field,
Cain rose up
against
his brother Abel,
and
slew him.
