I'd put my hand on my mouth,
shut off my own proud heart.
Turn off the angry fearful shout
tearing you and me apart.
If I could I'd turn back time
to right the wrongs I made.
I'd be yours with His heart fine;
with love you would be safe.
I was led with cold conviction,
away from your sad need.
Strangling my heart with deadly constriction,
my love was left to bleed.
Now I'm here, saying, “I'm right,”
in a cold and lonely room.
From my sin I cannot hide;
a shadow that still looms.
If I could I'd dash conviction,
for the sake of one so grieved.
Your relief my only mission
to give you a hopeful reprieve.
I'd be there to welcome you home
with a smile and caress so warm.
I'd be sure you're not alone,
keeping you from Satan's harm.
But here I am, with my heart,
not warm enough for wood.
Sad regret tears it apart;
it whispers, “If I could.”
